[opensuse] installing 15.1 or 15.2 as a xen guest keeps failing, but 42.3 works ?
I'm trying to install Leap 15.[12] in a xen DomU, but the creation of the installation keeps failing. This is just booting a guest with the loader kernel and initrd. Absolutely nothing unusual. After a few attempts and having enabled more and more unintelligible debug output, in desperation I thought I would try Leap 42.3 instead, and it worked! Does this ring a bell with anyone? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.8°C)

I have just tried to boot a copy of an SLES12SP5 system - failed with the same error. xenconsole: Could not read tty from store: No such file or directory libxl: error: libxl_exec.c:118:libxl_report_child_exitstatus: console child [0] exited with error status 2 This in itself doesn't say much, only that the guest could not be started. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.8°C)

Tumbleweed installation as Xen DomU - same issue. Booting : http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/boot/x86_64/loader/initrd http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/boot/x86_64/loader/linux What am I missing ? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.6°C)

Somewhere I've seen reports that recent kernels can't boot xen. Sorry, I don't use Xen so I've no idea what the problem is or where I saw it. A quick google shows various possiblities.

I've also got something like that gnawing away in the back of my mind. Not recent kernels though, the issue appears between 15.0 and 15.1, which were both using 4.12.14. I've been comparing the kernel configs between the two, but I'm sort of groping in the dark: https://files.jessen.ch/leap15x-kernel-config.diff https://files.jessen.ch/leap150-kernel-config.txt https://files.jessen.ch/leap151-kernel-config.txt -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland.

Well. It appears to be about the version of the xen host system. I have a few xen hosts downstairs, I picked one for testing, one that happens to be due for decommissioning anyway, it just has a couple of difficult-to-move guests. That host is running 13.2 with xen 4.4.4 - moving to a newer host with 15.0 and 4.10.1 and installing TW works just fine. I guess we don't have many people using xen here? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.9°C) http://www.cloudsuisse.com/ - your owncloud, hosted in Switzerland.

I confess my ignorance on xen. I do my virtualization with virtualbox or vmware player. But I have been reading the thread, to see what I can learn ;-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. For once I seem to be in a majority :)

There are many better things to spend or even waste your time doing IMHO :) Per has a reason.

I'm not sure what you are missing, but we miss at least the domU.cfg or domU.xml to make any statements... Olaf

Fair enough : # egrep -v '^#|^$' /srv/xen/auto/test151.conf kernel = "/srv/xen/install/opensuse-tw-20201120.kernel" ramdisk = "/srv/xen/install/opensuse-tw-20201120.initrd" extra = " xencons=tty usessh=1 sshpassword=1234 install=http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss " memory = 2048 name = "test151" vcpus = "1" vif = [ 'bridge=xenbr0,mac=7a:11:a2:11:aa:22' ] disk = [ 'phy:/dev/xenspace/test77,hda,w'] on_reboot = 'restart' FWIW, it works for installing Leap 42.3, just not anything later. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.8°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes

Correction, Leap 15.0 also works just fine. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.1°C) http://www.cloudsuisse.com/ - your owncloud, hosted in Switzerland.
