There's a problem that's plaguing our boxes (nvidia drivers, nvidia hardware, suse 7.1 kde2.X.X)
When logged in through KDM (init 5) I cannot switch to the virtual konsoles (ctrl-alt-F1 &c).
Aparently this problem is not eveident if you use gdm ..
Im wondering if this problem is Suse related, or kde 2 related. (or most likely, the nvidia drivers problem ;l)
Anyone else who has this problem

I have latest NVIDIA drivers, kernel 2.4.5, and KDE2.1.2 and can switch all day. Doesn't rule out the hardware and drivers but suggests it is SUSE Will tell more on config etc if wanted. I also have kdm, latest nvidia drivers (and of course SuSE). I don't have the bug either. I must add, though, that I compiled my KDE2 myself. Has everybody who uses SuSE, kdm and the drivers this problem? You seem to think so

I'm far from the only person who's observed this bug, though recompiling KDE2 is certainly something worth trying as a solution, particularly since the bug seems to arise through an unfortunate conjunction of the planets. Two questions: 1. Did you try logging out, logging in again, and then switching to a virtual terminal? Some people who thought the bug didn't exist only tried the VT switch on the first login, which is when it works. 2. What portions of KDE2 did you recompile and where did you get the source? That's particularly vital since the bug might be version-related. Paul

1. Did you try logging out, logging in again, and then switching to a virtual terminal? Some people who thought the bug didn't exist only tried the VT switch on the first login, which is when it works. I didn't do this on purpose but I can surely imagine i've done this, as I was tweaking my kdmrc file as root in a console and have logged in and out several times.
2. What portions of KDE2 did you recompile and where did you get the source? That's particularly vital since the bug might be version-related. Everything that is but a little kde-based. Qt (but this shouldn't do it), kdesupport, kdelibs and kdebase. I don't use the other packages like kdenetwork, kdemultimedia etc. I got the source from one of the kde ftp mirrors. (/pub/kde/stable/2.1.1/distribution/tar/generic/src/) except for the kdelibs (/pub/kde/stable/2.1.2/distribution/src/)

I assume you haven't had any problems in mixing the 2.1.2 libs with the 2.1.1 versions of the rest of the distribution, right? Paul

Nope, the libs are the only part upgraded to 2.1.1, they should be used like this. I also forgot to mention that I have SuSE 7.0, so the xdm config file are still from 7.0. The seperate kdm config files are not SuSE's (as they are in /opt/kde and not in /etc)
