[opensuse] KDE 4.1 impressions
Hi, after a long time using KDE 3.5.9 I decided to move towards KDE 4.1 as some patches and bugfixes have been released. I'm quite impressed with KDE 4.1, it's "a lot" faster than KDE 3.5.x and has some other nice features... But not everything is 100% smooth... Konsole is one of the most heavily used applications (at least for me). Under KDE 3.5.x you could define Konsole properties for each window open... under KDE 4.x if you change it in one, it'll change everywhere... I miss the transparent dark backgrounds... and the ability to save the my customized properties as Konsole defaults. With this new version of KDE I don't seem to find the right option. Even closing the session (with the "Restore current session"-option activated) won't restore my Konsole settings ... :-/ Dual-head doesn't seem to be quite supported when it comes to setting a desktop background... if you set up a slideshow, pics won't be scaled to fit the screen size but will be shown "as is"... The Solar Winds screensaver runs into a 1/8 of the screen, on the upper left corner of display 1... the rest is like white... And finally, changing form one virtual destop to another takes up to 2 seconds, while in KDE 3.5.9 it's intantaneous. I guess I can live with these glitches for a while... well, if I get fed up I can fall back to KDE 3.5.9 until there's a major improvement in 4.1, which is already a major step ahead itself... To keep your current settings you need to define first a profile.

Welcome to the testers world.

I'll see that after download is finished. Generally I have no compalins as long as I can have few tabs opened.
Dual-head doesn't seem to be quite supported when it comes to setting a desktop background... if you set up a slideshow, pics won't be scaled to fit the screen size but will be shown "as is"...
Work in progress.
The Solar Winds screensaver runs into a 1/8 of the screen, on the upper left corner of display 1... the rest is like white...
What is with others?

Only if Compiz-like desktop effects are enabled. Otherwise it is fast.

Like everybody else.
which is already a major step ahead itself...

3D (GL) screen savers all do this....on at least half a doz. boxen; all Intel or nVidia hardware.

Yes......Compiz is NOT a good idea on 4.1.

Actually "no complains". Too much trust in (broken?) spellcheckers. How to check dictionary? Google: compalins 2,440 hits.

Checked Bubles, Solar winds, Block tube and few more in test mode. It works fine here. Block tube in real timing (1 Min) works too. With or without KWin. Built in Nvidia GeForce 6100. I use "start with empty session" in Session management (Advanced tab). In case of configuration changes between releases, running settings from older version could be a problem. Besides, I use clean, KDE4 only, user account. It can make a difference.

KWin too. Just started it again, and it seems somewhat faster than yesterday. I got to check that again tomorrow.

There is a lot of work ahead. They are focused now on adding application ports from KDE3, so some other areas can be slower. I'll check more tomorrow. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't think the code is "solid" in a number of areas, and the screen saver is one of them.

'Not much choice, ya know. 'Either KWin or Compiz. ;)

Well, it's all important, but the interface needs to be done FIRST, IMHO, so it's not so much of a "little brother" of 3.5.9.
I'll check more tomorrow.
And, it looks like MANY, MANY days after that. :) Fred -- Linux is an old Latin word meaning, "I don't have to support your Windows anymore." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
