I installed SuSE 9.1 on my box and was surprised to find a "My Computer"-icon on the desktop. When I click on this icon a new konqueror window pops up that has 3 entries: "CD-Recorder" "DVD" and "Floppy". How can I add an extra entry? When I open the "My Computer"-icon with an editor I find this line: "URL=drives:/" Shouldn't there be a folder "drives" on the hard drive that contains the 3 above mentioned entries? Does anybody know how this works? Is there a documentation available? Thanks, Fabian
FWIW, I _hate_ any filename that has "my" in it. First, it may not be "my" computer, it might belong to my employer, or my son, or whatever. Second, it may be only one of "my" computers. Third, it sounds like something you would put on a machine designed for 5-year olds. What stupidity. What's wrong with "this computer?" --doug At 11:49 PM 5/7/2004 +0200, Fabian Niestroj wrote:

As it's Linux, it should be possible to rename the icon or keep that machine safely away from the office idiot. A fancy sign/screen saver saying "Doug's Computer" on the monitor perhaps. I bet MS will change it in Longhorn, breaking the barrier to calling it something less corny. The basic idea seems OK, Sun's misnomer "Java Desktop" based on SuSE and others have corralled those functions on to one window, especially for very young kids, grannies, grandads (my contemporaries) and other forms of mouse jockies. I share Doug's annoyance with this. I paid for this computer (enough that I wouldn't forget it anytime soon). I know it's mine and it's one of my favourite possession. Anyone trying to change that have got to be careful. So of course the stuff on it is mine. Who else's would it be? I guess I'm not part Microsoft's main target audience. I'm just saddened that SUSE took up this intellectually derogatory practice too. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za
Watch out folks you know what the next one will be ..:-)... starting with "My Processor" onto "My Ram" then we'll get the SCO bit i own computing so "My World" and of course the last one just has to be "My Toilet Roll " an thats where we leave this story Pete . I think they could have used just a tiny bit of imagination in their choice, but you can call it whatever you like. I've just done the upgrade from 9.0 x86_64, when I click on that icon which I have now renamed the much nicer "Main Gate To Hell", maybe "Gateway To Heaven" later or "Command Post", "Configuration Cent-re/er" or anything but "My Puter", it has drives:// and displays 3 Icons for my CD-RW/DVD in the window it opens up. Another funny, # grub-install /dev/hda /usr/lib/stage1 no such file or directory ------------------------------------------- I copied all the stage files from /boot/grub to /usr/lib and it was happy. I shall see what happens tomorrow when I upgrade the 32-bit boxes. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

I guess I'm not part Microsoft's main target audience. I'm just saddened that SUSE took up this intellectually derogatory practice too. I agree entirely, Of course, I've not been part of MS *target* audience since the begining. My skills, such as they are , have been earned by me and my adventures and mis- adventures w/ computers, which at the earlly stage I actually paid $10k US for.. the idea that they believe , and they do, that no matter the price the computer belings to them and I am only allowed to *use* it as they think I should was something abhorent. Not to mention something they showed very early on.. I switched from windows 3.0 to OS/2 in a "deal" where you got basically a free copy of it for the handing in of a page of the windows "manual" .. And I bought Os/2 from then on, w/o the windows add in when that became an option. I never installed it so saw no need to pay the *tax*...
I did Beta test w2k, and discovered, as did many others, they weren't interested in hearing about any bugs, they were going to release it in schedule reguardless of it's viability... Suse became the standard here, when doing a backup led to danger of life or limb as the backup media ( an orb drive and 2.5 gig optical disk) spit the disk out at a users head... apparently , asking w2k to do a back up is beneath it's dignity! It did obsolete the windows partitions on this net that very day, after all even w2k isn't very good at maintaining it's integrity and often needs the "reinstall the os" solution to many of it's problems... the thing is worse than HAL2000, which at least adhered to it's mission to "protect the mission at all costs" even if that meant to kill off all the human componants of the mission... they were attempting to endanger the mission by aborting it. I do wish that "this computer" would be the designation, if they need to THo, what if it's a thin client ? There doesn't seem an easy designation for any of it... perhaps the name that one uses , Phred, starblaster, skronk, etc . would be better, at least once you have gone thru the steps in yast and named the computer it should show on the desktop w/ that name... would that be a hard script to write or have work? I ask, because we all know, I break programs, but I am not a programmer, don't have the correct brain structure... Programmers seem to have step logic brains, mine seems to operate more like hyperlinks, one thought may lead to another 3 steps away; but not necesserily the next step in order... -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit it's just an afterthought; okay ? : You're listening to KPLA, Klingon radio: All glory, all the time!
That's exactly the dutch version in windows...'deze computer' (and that is 'this computer' in english). Microsoft's weird with this, because they still have 'My Documents' and everything. Doug McGarrett wrote:

I guess you missed that news a while ago, about King Billy laying claim to everything you create using MS software. That "My" is from his perspective, not yours! ;-)

Man, you're in luck ... here in Sweden, the legal department just decided we have to pay tribute to King HillBilly everytime we open our Windows. Darn, guess I'm gonna have to buy a gabriolet now ... so I can drive my car without windows.
I promise to rename the "My Computer" icon if anybody could answer my initial questions. Fabian

If you don't like "My Computer" as an icon, please report it as a bug here: http://www.suse.de/cgi-bin/feedback.cgi Hopefully, if enough of us do it, it will be gone by the next release. I would like a YOU patch within the month. It has to go. Otherwise, Open Office will surely get automatic context sensitive help, probably introduced by an animated paperclip: - "I see you are typing some text. Use your keyboard to type some more. Would you like me to tell you how to identify your keyboard?" I certainly can't stand this twee drivel, it is so naff. If the Dutch get 'deze computer' [elsewhere this thread], then the English should get the equivalent. It does look like thoughtless internationalization. What do the Germans get? Vince
