[opensuse] SuSE 10.1/1680x1050 Widescreen/nVidia <- does not work
Hi, I have replaced my dead monitor with new widescreen LCD ViewSonic VX2025 with native resolution 1680x1050 (I think it is equal to Apple Cinema Display and other 20.1" analogs). The problem is that SAX cannot set resolution over 1280x1024 no matter what I have tried. I even deleted x.org configs, reinstalled x.org, sax2, nVidia 9629 drivers and even reset BIOS. VX2025 is not listed in SAX hardware profiles, and unfortunately, SAX has a bug and it cannot read driver CD neither from Combo neither from DVD-R I have. I could copy vx2025.inf file, but I cannot find where. SAX generated xconfig and x.org logs are attached ---------------------------------------- # /.../ # SaX generated X11 config file # Created on: 2006-11-25T02:00:20+0200. # # Version: 7.1 # Contact: Marcus Schaefer <sax@suse.de>, 2005 # Contact: SaX-User list <https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/sax-users> # # Automatically generated by [ISaX] (7.1) # PLEASE DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! # Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/PEX" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin7/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/baekmuk:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/japanese:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/kwintv" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/uni:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/sgi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/xtest" FontPath "/opt/kde3/share/fonts" InputDevices "/dev/gpmdata" InputDevices "/dev/input/mice" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "on" EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "extmod" Load "glx" Load "v4l" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "kbd" Identifier "Keyboard[0]" Option "Protocol" "Standard" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "Buttons" "6" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Name" "Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse" Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool" DisplaySize 430 270 HorizSync 30-82 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "VIEWSONIC VX2025WM" Option "DPMS" VendorName "VSC" VertRefresh 43-75 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Modes" Identifier "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1024" "1600x1000" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1024" "1600x1000" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1024" "1600x1000" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1024" "1600x1000" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce FX 5500" BusID "1:5:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "NVIDIA" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout[all]" InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer" Option "Clone" "off" Option "Xinerama" "off" Screen "Screen[0]" EndSection Section "DRI" Group "video" Mode 0660 EndSection Section "Extensions" EndSection ---------------------------------------- Here is x.org log file: X Window System Version 6.9.0 Release Date: 21 December 2005 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.9 Build Operating System: SuSE Linux [ELF] SuSE Current Operating System: Linux su37 2.6.18.2-jen37-desktop #1 SMP Tue Nov 7 11:02:06 EST 2006 i686 Build Date: 13 September 2006 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.X.Org to make sure that you have the latest version. I have replaced my dead monitor with new widescreen LCD ViewSonic VX2025 with native resolution 1680x1050 (I think it is equal to Apple Cinema Display and other 20.1" analogs).
SAX generated xconfig and x.org logs are attached
I'm no expert on nvidia. I see in the log that no valid 1680x1050 mode was found, but have no idea why.
Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce FX 5500" BusID "1:5:0" Driver "nvidia"
Just as a test, I suggest you manually edit xorg.conf and substitute in the line above "nv" for "nvidia" and see if 1680x1050 works. I bought http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/graphicseries/... about two months ago, and it works with every video card I've tried just fine in factory and 10.0. -- "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven." The problem is that SAX cannot set resolution over 1280x1024 no matter what I have tried.
SAX generated xconfig and x.org logs are attached

I have a Viewsoni VA2012w monitor running 1680X1050 just fine in Suse 10.1. Make sure you select LCD in SAX2 to get the resolution you want. Art -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi,
I have replaced my dead monitor with new widescreen LCD ViewSonic VX2025 with native resolution 1680x1050 (I think it is equal to Apple Cinema Display and other 20.1" analogs).
[pruned] I bought the VX2025WM 2 days ago and it is running very, very well, thank you on 10.1. And it is running at the native resolution of 1680x1050. Start sax2 and go to monitor change where you select the LCD--> default option -- which is equivalent to VESA--> default -- and there you will find the only entry of 1680x1050@60Hz. Select this and.... the Viewsonic will work like magic. (BTW, the monitor is recognised automatically in 10.2 RC1.) A point: you will need to drop the gamma for the monitor (Personal Settings>Display>Gamma) from the 1.0 down to whatever level you feel comfortable with -- I went down to 0.70 gamma -- because the screen is *too* bright :-( . Also, select sRGB colour rather than the default 6500K to get "proper" colours. Finally, use the digital connection to get better picture but bear in mind that with digital connection you lose 2 monitor controls because they are not needed (read the User Manual on disc). Hi,
I have replaced my dead monitor with new widescreen LCD ViewSonic VX2025 with native resolution 1680x1050 (I think it is equal to Apple Cinema Display and other 20.1" analogs).

VX2025 is not listed in SAX hardware profiles, and unfortunately, SAX has a bug and it cannot read driver CD neither from Combo neither from DVD-R I have. I could copy vx2025.inf file, but I cannot find where.

I bought the VX2025WM 2 days ago and it is running very, very well, thank you on 10.1.
(BTW, the monitor is recognised automatically in 10.2 RC1.)
A point: you will need to drop the gamma for the monitor (Personal Settings>Display>Gamma) from the 1.0 down to whatever level you feel comfortable with -- I went down to 0.70 gamma -- because the screen is *too* bright :-( . Also, select sRGB colour rather than the default 6500K to get "proper" colours. Finally, use the digital connection to get better picture but bear in mind that with digital connection you lose 2 monitor controls because they are not needed (read the User Manual on disc).

I don't suggest changing gamma. All monitors have a gamma of 2.3, and all graphics systems (including web sites) rely on that. If you change the gamma value, stuff typically looks horribly broken. Yes, but you should try to fix this by changing Contrast and Luminance, not by Gamma. If it looks better with a different gamma, the monitor electronics might be bad, in that case a different gamma setting is ok. If you connect the ViewSonic using the digital cable you lose the ability to change Contrast/Brightness and any Manual Adjustments to the image size/position; only connecting using the analog connection can one get these controls back. The only way to control the monitor when using digital, therefore, is thru the software - in this case playing around with the gamma setting in Personal Settings (in Suse). You won't control the monitor this way, only the final output table of the graphics hardware. BTW - both 100% white and 100% black will remain exactly the same if you change gamma. So the monitor will continue to shine as bright as before when you're using a white background like in terminal windows. No, it's not the monitor that is broken but me :-) . I just looked at bit closer at the manual and also what I did with the settings and the real story is that if you use the DVI connection then- the Auto Image Adjust (which auto adjusts for waviness etc on analog); and the Manual Image Adjust (which adjusts hor/vert position) are disabled but everything else is 'working'. The monitor has 4 colour temperature settings: 4500K 6500K 9300K and sRGB This is were I went wrong with what I said earlier. It is setting the colour to sRGB which disables the Contrast/Brightness control because it is not needed, but Contrast/Brightness adjustment is available if you choose any of the other 3 temperatures. So I have now (temporarily) dropped the sRGB setting and (briefly) fiddled with the contrast and brightness settings but I'll return to the sRGB setting because the HP Photosmart printer I defaults to sRGB setting and this to me means that - in theory :-) - what I see on the screen is what I'll see in print. (I say "in theory" because both the monitor and the printer are new to me and the printer has not yet been put to proper use.)
The only way to control the monitor when using digital, therefore, is thru the software - in this case playing around with the gamma setting in Personal Settings (in Suse).

Err - I do not see what the color response curve has *anything* to do with brightness. You can argue about contrast, but not about brightness.

Still this issue? I am not aware that SaX2 has any limits regarding the selectable size. You just cannot select modes your monitor cannot display, so if you explicitely select a larger one, it should be possible. Be sure to select a LCD one (reduced modes).

Add Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidMaxPClkCheck,NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck" in the "Device" section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Some Monitors ly about their capabilities. If this works, please create a bug report so we can add the monitor to the database. If it doesn't, please create a bug report, it's probably more complicated. Maybe you even have to add "NoEdidModes" to this list. Maybe only one of these is enough. These options are explained in /usr/share/doc/packages/x11-video-nvidia/README.txt (or /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA/README.txt, depending on your installation method).

In that case you will need the reduced mode. You probably have to add it manually. Your card and/or monitor is not dual-link capable. You need 7MB graphics memory (24bit) and a pixel clock of 119MHz at least (reduced mode, for LCDs only - 147MHz for CRTs). Current cards have >=256MB and >=350MHz... Please don't nail me on TNT2, but that is what I remember. At least the GeForce2 was capable of doing 1600x1200 on our CRTs AFAIR. Hi, Thanks a lot for everyone who arrived with bright advises and help. Sorry to reply late, but I have just now (almost) finished this journey. My video card GeForce 5500 with 128 MB is capable of 1680x1050, but one of my fiends who is very fluent in electronics and PC hardware told me that this card is quite old, and therefore, it is capable of HD 16:10 resolution ONLY in VGA mode, and NOT DVI. Additionally, he said, it may suffer from glitches artifacts anyway. I have used xorg.conf supplied by Basil, and yes, monitor worked in 1680x1050 ONLY in VGA mode. Reconnecting it to DVI resulted back 1280x1024. Moreover, I have decided to give another try, and installed SuSE 10.2RC1 on another hard drive. There were NO WAY I could make it work in 1680x1050, no matter of VGA or DVI mode, even with 100% config supplied by Basil. So, I have replaced a video card, upgraded to SuSE10.2RC1, and... switched to 1680x1050 without any problem. Everything is almost fine, except the fact hardware 3D acceleration cannot be turned on in yast->sax (even with sax2 -r -0 0=nvidia, modprobe nvidia works). Sluggish redraw (i.e. shaded KDE toolbar) and glxinfo clearly show that MESA is used instead of nVidia GLX. I have used src.rpm made by jengelh to rebuild kernel module and x.org GLX libs on 10.2 RC1. Here are output of glxinfo, xorg.log, and xorg.conf. Log file seem to be do not show any errors.
As DVI has no knowledge about aspect ratio, this is certainly not true! Again, this is about single link interfaces and their maximum pixel clock of 135MHz. A non-reduced mode (that can be used for CRTs as well) needs 147, so it is not working. A reduced mode only needs 119. Also, 1680x1050 is *no* HD mode - only 1280x720 and 1920x1080 are. And they are 16:9, not 16:10 as 1680x1050 is.
I have used xorg.conf supplied by Basil, and yes, monitor worked in 1680x1050 ONLY in VGA mode. Reconnecting it to DVI resulted back 1280x1024.
Add the reduced mode line and the options I've written, and it *should* work with DVI - it did with a 5300. I just reviewed the bug, you might need to add "NoMaxPClkCheck" as well. Mode validation has changed quite a bit in the newer NVidia drivers. Note that this description is for the *proprietary* driver only. On Nov 29, 06 15:59:53 +0100, Matthias Hopf wrote:
