[opensuse] Epson v330 scanner
In searching for a new scanner to replace my old one that is now defunct, I have become interested in the Epson V330. This scanner is unsupported by XSane, but Epson has a driver for it. It also has a GUI for this driver, but this GUI is said to support only black and white scanning. My question is if I install this driver, will XSane be able to see it and make use of it? I would be grateful for comments and advice, especially from anyone who has tried this.with an Epson scanner. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I wouldn't buy such a scanner either. It isn't the V330 that is limited to monochrome scanning, but the front end that Epson associates with the epkowa driver. That's why I am asking if XSane can see and use that driver. From Basil's response, it seems that it can. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There are 2 GUIs available to handle the Epson scanner. One is Scanlite in Yast and the other the XSane. The Scanlite is very primitive from memory. Sorry I cannot check this out at the moment - but I am pretty sure of what I just stated is correct. I have V33 scanner. I have downloaded drivers and now my scanner works perfectly. All GUI application handle my scanner. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, I saw that this whole range of scanners is "unsupported". I'm reasonably sure that the V330 and your V300 is very similar, so I can assume that the epkowa will be seen and used to support the V330. I was originally going to buy the V330 but the stock ran out and had to buy the V300 Photo. Perfect for my needs - and cost a lot less. But the v330 seems to be a model destined for Australia. Are you also somewhere in Australia? Not that it matters..... The epkowa driver is installable using Yast (search for 'epkowa' in Yast's Software Manager. As for the drivers from Epson, they have a dependency on each other. Which means that the best way to install them is to use the command line 'rpm -i *.rpm' in the directory into which you placed the downloaded 2 parts of the driver. According to http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=epson&model=v330 it seems you ask about the third-party driver "epkowa" from Avasys: http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/ Please ask those who make the third-party driver because only those who make the driver could provide reliable information. The responsibility of the drivers previously available from Avasys has been transferred to Epson. If you go to the above URL you will see the notice re this. And if you want to download the driver(s) for Epson from Epson be prepared to go thru hoops :-) . Advisable to have a mug of coffee on hand and some spare time :-) . Thanks for the information! I got the URL "http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/" from http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=epson&model=v330 (the URL is to what "epkowa" points). Yesterday I downloaded from Epson the epkowa file, as well as the iscan and iscan-data files (the front end). The V330 is indeed in the Avasys list of scanners supported by epkowa. The remaining question was whether XScan will work with epkowa, which I conclude from your experience with the V300 is the case. I found the Avasys site much more hoop-jumping than the Epson; it is also much more informative. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
