How to use a different 'messages' log file

Hi I'm setting up a linux network with one server and 6 clients connecting to it via NIS and NFS (all SuSE 7.0). Is it possible to log all of the messages that would normally be written to the clients' "/var/log/messages" to the server's /var/log/messages file. I expect it can be done by mounting /var/log over NFS, but how safe/secure would this be? Is there a better way? Thanks, Andrew

There is a better way. Edit /etc/rc.config on the server and set
SYSLOGD_PARAMS="-r"
The -r option allows remote machines to log to syslog. On the client
machine, edit /etc/syslog.conf and add line(s)
*.* @server
to log everything to the host named server. You may want to be more
selective. The left hand side is the usual syslog.conf patterns.

This file is created c.q. writen to by syslogd, which receives the messages from the applications. Look at 'man syslog.conf' to learn howto send the messages to another machine (hint: @) and look at 'man syslogd' to learn howto accept remote messages (hint: option -r).

Forget NFS. It's not save enough for log messages. Use syslogd, it is installed and you're already using it. Regards, Cees.

dont use nfs. on the log server, change the line in /etc/rc.config that is like SYSLOGD_PARAMS= to SYSLOGD_PARAMS="-r" then restart syslog. on the clients, put an entry in /etc/syslog.conf like mail.* @logserver.domain.com for all the entries you want to log to the server then restart syslog on the client and thats it. now get a good cron script to rotate you log files on the log server and back them up to a cd or tape frequently. Greetings, What are you people using for financial software on Suse? I need a good personal checkbook application...something that can handle quicken files that I download from my bank. I know Moneydance and GnuCash will do this...but in my opinion they are a little substandard. GnuCash's price is right for what you get...but Moneydance is a little pricey what you get IMHO. Thanks, Brian D.
