I just installed a CD-Writer into my machine...
In reading the HOWTO on CD-Writing, I noticed that even ATAPI-based writers
like mine should be configured as SCSI. Is this still the case? Why?

Since they work via the SCSI driver. You need to add ide-scsi. I think the kernel parameter is ide-scsi=/dev/hdX. This loads the ide-scsi modul. After that you should be able to use your cd writer. I havn't tested that (yet) since mine is scsi. If I'am wrong someone will tell. ;-) Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

You can first try it out by "modprobe ide-scsi" The CD-drive should then accessible through /dev/scd0 and "cdrecord -scanbus" should show all devices in ide-scsi bus. --jq -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Hi first of all: it would be a good idea to set the date of your computer a little more accurate bartosh@heretic.mabaleb.org wrote:

a) I'm wondering if there's any particular reason it is not inclused in the distro?
b) when I run the standard m4 commands against /etc/sendmail.cf I get the errors:
cut error protocol
(Sendmail works before I do
root@heretic:/usr/doc/packages/sendmail > m4 /usr/share/sendmail/cf/cyrusproto.mc > /etc/sendmail.cf
What you are doing here is actually generating a sendmail.cf file out of an "add on" to the sendmail.mc file. What you need to do is include the necesarry commands in the sendmail.mc file that makes m4 include the cyrusproto.mc into the final sendmail.cf file. One possible solution is the following: Edit the linux.mc file in /etc/mail/. Configure the mailers as follows: define (`confLOCAL_MAILERŽ,`cyrusŽ) MAILER(`localŽ) MAILER(`smtpŽ) MAILER(ŽcyrusŽ) Comment out the MAILER procmail statements (and all others, unless of course you need any of them). There might be a define confLOCALMAILER procmail statement. Get rid of that one too. After that, m4 the linuc.mc to sendmail.cf and all mail will be delivered to cyrus (via deliver). Beware that this includes mails to root. There are some tweaks to this problem but it is another story. cu markus -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Something to do with the fact that the commands for writing CD's are actually scsi commands, so atapi devices must implement these in emulation. This was one of the reasons I got a *real* scsi cd-writer -- they are much easier to set up, and seem more reliable.

Please? What's so difficult about adding a 'append="hdX=ide-scsi"' to your
lilo.conf and either 'modprobe ide-scsi' to /sbin/init.d/boot.local or
'alias scsi-hostadapter ide-scsi' to /etc/modules.conf?
My experience is, that the bus used is not so much important but rather the
features you need/want, e.g. reliably reading audio CDs at high speed.
