Re: [SLE] Ximian, another time... help please
Hi! The dependencies I had are now ok but ... Ximian Desktop seems good and I would want to try it but it tells me that a lot of packages (KDE packages) will be removed. Why that?? I don't want it. Is it possible to install Ximian Desktop and to keep KDE? How? Thanks a lot

Hi!
When I try to install Ximian desktop from the website, I follow the procedure and I have a problem that I don't know what to do. I got this message and I can't install Ximian. What I must do
Dependency Failure Package dependencies could not be completely resolved and Ximian GNOME cannot be installed on your system. <snip>
Package gnet needs package gnet equal to version 1.1.0-1 which cannot be found. Package gnet-devel needs package gnet equal to version 1.0.4 which cannot be found. Package monkeytalk needs package libgnet-1.0.so.0 which cannot be found.
Have you tried typing the above into http://fr2.rpmfind.net (I find fr2 has more SuSE specific packages). I had a similar problem but with different packages (scheme.rpm in particular).
Once you have those installed, Ximian should install fine, as you can see from my headers. :)

I installed Ximian GNOME fine without the setup touching my KDE rpms - I'm afraid I can't help you with that. However, what I will say is that I was not impressed with Ximian. There were a number of problems with my installation: 1. Galeon was just an empty white window, with no toolbar or menu. 2. Redcarpet doesn't start as a normal user despite prompting for the root password. You have to start from console. 3. Menus are messed up - e.g. gnome-games is installed, by games menu is empty. 4. Control Centre listing is messed up - seemingly random options appear at the top of my tree listing. 5. If you select gdm as login manager, it fails to find any config files. To be honest, I only installed Ximian for Galeon and to see how Evolution had progressed. I used to like GNOME, but it just isn't a patch on KDE now (especially looking at the KDE 3 beta). Sorry I can't be of more assistance! -- Daniel Rees e: dan@dwrees.co.uk w: http://www.dwrees.co.uk
Re; troubles with installation and Galeon: This shows the advisability of spending a little and getting the CDROM from ximian, which comes with 30 days of installation help. dj tuchler On Saturday 09 February 2002 16:52, Daniel Rees wrote:

Howdy, everyone: I thought I'd toss in my $0.02 on this topic... On Sat, 2002-02-09 at 14:52, Daniel Rees wrote:

I get this too :-( Once I do fire up RedCarpet (as root),the download speeds from a number of the mirror-sites is *very slow*.
3. Menus are messed up - e.g. gnome-games is installed, by games menu is empty.
Again, I have this too, but a bit worse. Using the System -> Settings, get the top-level label "KDE" or "SuSE", and the flyout submenus are empty. The apps which should appear under these menu-points do exist, though - from a console, I can issue "koncd" for example, or "konqueror" and they run fine.
5. If you select gdm as login manager, it fails to find any config files.
You're luckier than I was! Using GDM, my SuSE 7.2 system was hooped - GDM wouldn't accept any keypresses from my keyboard :-( Temporarily I fixed this by chaning to KDM, which worked fine. Later, I re-downloaded and re-installed GDM, and it started working. I reported this to Ximian, and they've set the status as "Not gdm", claiming they've had a few reports of this, all from SuSE users. Therefore, it's a SuSE problem. Hmm.

I like the polished user-interface with Ximian Desktop. I'm staying with it, but it *does* have its warts. I haven't seen KDE 3, but I'll definitely take a look later on. -Gord -- Gordon Pritchard, P.Eng., Member IEEE Technical University of B.C. - Research Lab Engineer mailto:gordon.pritchard@techbc.ca direct phone: 604-586-6186

Hmmm, which ones? It should not touch anything strictly KDE at all... Matt
