/etc/conf.modules is a `master file' of sorts. The kernel depends on this being edited properly for any modules to load. It's not a complicated file, it's just large. Last I checked, Hubert did a wonderful job of commenting it so that anyone can read what any section does. I use pico as an editor at the prompt, but kwrite or kedit under X/KDE might be a better way to look at such a large file. Hello everybody,
I have a SoundBlaster Live! card and order to get any sound out of my system I downloaded a driver. To get things working I need to edit /etc/conf.modules The problem is, I don't know how to use an editor yet. Is there a simpler method to do this?
What I need to do, according to the instructions in the README file that came with the driver, is the following:
1) Add a new reference to the driver in /etc/conf.modules (e.g. "alias sound emu10k1" or "alias char-major-14 emu10k1")
2) If the kernel is compiled with version information, add the following lines to the previous statement; pre-install emu10k1 insmod soundcore post-remove emu10k1 rmod soundcore
3) Load the driver; "modprobe emu10k1"
I already took care of some other steps that also needed to be done.
Thank you very much.

Hi there, Following the instructions in the README file (Installation Instructions for Creative emu10k1 drivers) I added the following lines to /etc/conf.modules : # sound (for Soundblaster Live! card) alias sound emuk1 Then I tried to load the driver: $ modprobe emu10k1 I got the following lines: Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.10/modules.dep modprobe: Can't locate module emu10k1 Even after recompiling the kernel and modules ($ make dep clean zImage modules modules_install zlilo) the results remain the same. What am I doing wrong? This driver is a binary-only kernel module which does not belong to the official kernel sources. Did you actually install the package containing the module? You should then find a file called "emu10k1.o" below /lib/modules. Did you run "depmod -a"? Hi there, I did install the correct module -the one suitable for kernel 2.2.10- and the file called "emu10k1.o" is present below /lib/modules. Also, the line in /etc/conf.modules does read alias sound emu10k1 - I made a typo in my previous message (sorry about that!). After running "depmod -a" I still got the dreaded "Can't locate module emu10k1" message. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Possibly you've figured this out already, but there is a package on the CDs that copies the modules needed to a directory where you can run an install program to copy the correct version of the module and add the appropriate lines to /etc/conf.modules for you. -- Brad Shelton On Line Exchange http://online-isp.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
