Hi all, I'm a big fan of SuSE, and have addict to it since suse 8.1. In these days i always use Yast to maintain my computers and production servers, including install and upgrade aplications. Right now i'd like to try apt (http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/ ) in my computers, but i still dont know what kind of problem that might come with it. If I use apt, do I still need to use YOU in Yast to update ? What if I want to install application from CD, will it problem ? Should I switch to apt instead of yast ? Any input will be appreciate.. Thanks. :) -- Arie Reynaldi Zanahar reymanx at gmail.com http://www.reynaldi.com

I have used apt-get/synaptic with 9.0 and now with 9.1. The benefit is that there are a lot of "nice" and unstripped packages (like mplayer, libdvdcss, etc.) which are not part of the official distro. Also, that way you can try newer (less stable) versions of KDE, etc. Today I have build a 9.2 machine, and I found that apt repository does not contain the base packages yet, so if you are running 9.2, avoid apt for a while, at least until they add the base packages. I still can use yast to install some packages from the CD, and them upgrade then (if needed) with synaptic/apt. Hope that helps Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

You can build a local apt repository with http://apt4rpm.sf.net (or use 'apt install apt4rpm'). The apt is build for the packages on cd or dvd, so there is no need to copy the packages to harddisk ;) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

So, if I use apt4rpm, I dont need to update my linux box using yast right ? I use debian also, and really pleasent with apt-get in it.. cause I can upgrade from woody to sarge "easily".. with Yast (you), i only get patch, not really upgrade software. I just wonder with compatibility with Suse itself, AFAIK Yast - suse - has really tight policy in using software. Is there any issue should I concern regarding this ? -- Arie Reynaldi Zanahar reymanx at gmail.com http://www.reynaldi.com
