I want to uninstall an rpm package. The original package is in my home directory. In that directory, after becoming superuser, I enter rpm -e <the rpm package> only to be told that that package is not installed! Just to make sure it is installed, I do rpm -U <rpm package name> and am told that it is already installed! Did Franz Kafka write the rpm program? What now? Thanks dj tuchler
You have it backwards:
rpm -e <rpm package name> # uninstall
or
rpm -U <rpm package file> # install

Try: rpm --rebuilddb That will hopefully solve it. - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8cXUz+FOexA3koIgRAtbJAJwI9Bp2i5Bg23iNss00uJBVpiAH7gCgphg5 v/o/UAnsxD2toa2hxh45yPg= =9twg -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

The name of the package is not necessarily the name of the rpm file. If you are not sure of the *exact* name of the package, use rpm -qa | grep <part-of-the-name> to find the exact name of the package. Then, use rpm -e <package> Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ wielder of vi(m), an ancient, dangerous and powerful magic free your mind, and your OS will follow

Are you doing rpm -e package-name.1-2-3.rpm or just rpm -e package-name ? do a "rpm -q -a|grep name" to find the exact word you should use to remove the program. Ewan

For a package named 'foo-bar-bat.i386.rpm', try doing this (as root): rpm -qa | grep foo-bar Which should return: foo-bar-bat Then do 'rpm -e foo-bar-bat' And it should (key word here, *should*) remove the package assuming no other dependencies or such.
