Ok people .. I am going to take the plunge and start playing games again. Anyone using the TNT2 chip set and playing Quake III? If so .. does it run well ... is it hard to get up and running .. any tweaking needed? I just installed 6.3 .. seems nice and it's a fresh install, the only thing I kept was /home. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Laters, -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -------------------- "Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom" --Gen. Yes, we here at SuSE... TNT and TNT2 both work very well. You can add slightly more details if you have a TNT2...

Nothing at all. Make sure you have the resolutions that you want to use for Quake (800x600?) in your XF86Config, because otherwise Quake will be unable to switch to that resolution. -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
This is interesting. I left off looking at Q3 because of the horrible problems I had getting Q2 to run on my TNT2. I got there eventually, but it took 2 weeks of fiddling and frustration. Does the XServer matter like it does with Q2? The X Server in SuSE-6.3 claims experimental support for TNT2 3D, but it crashed every time I tried it. I ended up backing out to 3.3.2 from the nVidia package, which does work. Has Q3 got an install routine which just works?

??? I use the xsvga server for my card. It's important to also install the glxriva package (fro TNT cards), of course, and add Section "Module" Load "glx.so" EndSection to ones XF86Config.

Never had any stability problems.

Yes, it's pretty easy. -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I have a Viper 770 which is TNT2 Ultra based. I have the XF86 module set up right, and it all works with the 3.3.2 SVGA server from nVidia's ftp site. Plug in the SVGA server from the SuSE-6.3 disk and it crashes every time. Sound like there's still issues outstanding here. I'll hold off until I get a report of someone running Q3 with a TNT2Ultra card. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

That's what our workstations here at SuSE have. Don't now about that 'Ultra', but the package says it's a Viper 770 (don't know if there're several versions).

Not true, or why do I keept winning all our Q3 sessions if my system crashes? (I used 6.2 and now 6.3 with Quake 2 and now 3, both demo and now full version)

Strange. Sounds like I have screwed up somewhere. I have an SMP box - could that make a difference? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Besides games .. what advantages does loading the GLX extention provide? I started KDE and it won't let me do the 3D GL screensavers and I know I loaded the module correctly .. so what preformance increase will loading this give me.. It may be a dumb question, but I just never thought about it..and don't know. laters, -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -------------------- "Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom" --Gen. Nothing. Only if you have a program that uses the GL extensions, like 3D games like Quake3. -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Seems like they are broken.

Every application that uses OpenGL (Mesa) to display 3D-Graphics profits from using the hardware acceleration. Some Examples: tux_aqfh, bzflag, Blender, Moonlight Creator, X-Screensaver, xlock just to name a few. The GLUT demos are also nice to look at. xmms also ships with a 3D spectrum analyzer.
