Hi! I use SuSE 9.3. I downloaded the debian sarge dvd image 1, and went to burn it on a DVD+R. When I used k3b, it gave a weird error about Input/Output error, and when I tried from command line I got: steven@linux:~/jigdo-bin-0.7.2> growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=`pwd`/`ls *.iso` Executing 'builtin_dd if=/home/steven/jigdo-bin-0.7.2/debian-31r0a-i386-binary-1.iso of=/dev/dvd obs=32k seek=0' /dev/dvd: "Current Write Speed" is 3.3x1385KBps. 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? 0/4686706688 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:?? :-( unable to WRITE@LBA=0h: Input/output error :-( write failed: Input/output error steven@linux:~/jigdo-bin-0.7.2> This error is almost exactly like k3b's. This error is almost exactly like k3b's. I just got my DVD+/-RW Duel Layer drive, which burns CDs flawlessly. /dev/hdc is set to 666 with chmod. What is up?? -Steven
Looks like it can not set the writing speed and does not know the size of the media. The recognized media types are stored in the firmware of the drive, so you may try to update the firmware. If this does not help, try with a different media. Cheers Sunny -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

How do you update the firmware?

Usually by downloading a new firmware from manufacturer's web site, and following their instructions. The bad part is, that most of them has update programs only for windows, so most probably you'll need a windows machine to do this. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

For some reason, I found that I didn't have dma turned on for my DVD burner. I turned it on, and now k3b doesn't bomb, but says that I need a double-layer dvd instead of my 4.7GB DVD+R(oddly, k3b treats it as a 4.4GB). I even do a test with a 300mb file, but it still doesn't like my DVD+R(insists that I need a double-layer). Growisofs says that the 4.4GB iso image is too large, too. I am trying a demo of nerolinux, and it says that I need a dvd+rw,dvd-rw, or a dvd+double-layer.It doesn't report input/output errors, though. -Steven
