[opensuse] Blue screen whenever trying to view video
I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 with an Intel 855 video card. Prior to installing 10.3 I had no problem playing any kind of video via MPlayer, Xine, Kaffeine or any other video player. With 10.3 all I get is a blue screen on any video player I try. I can hear the audio for any movie/video I try to play. I have googled and searched the opensuse lists and forums and tried everytghing from settin the vga on boot to changing the video drivers in the settings menu. Nothing works, My wite's Dell has a real video card in it and works fine with 10.3. Any suggestions are appreciated. Have you installed the codecs? Most likely the videos you are seeing are created in proprietary format. Suse can't release the codecs for those formats due to patent/legal reasons. You would need to download and install the codecs yourself. -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you try to change the output driver in mplayer - xv, x11, etc.? Have you installed the w32codec package? -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like a problem with xvideo can you try using the parameter -vo gl with mplayer, and see if you get video then? Anders -- Madness takes its toll -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Like sunny said, you probably need to change the output driver. I had that problem some time ago... http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/mplayer_blue.jpg ...which was fixed by right click on mplayer > preferences > video tab HTH! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks Kai, Anders, Sunny and Bryen. Sorry for the delay but had some problems that kept me from the computer for a few days. I have tried all the suggested solutions and still no joy. I reloaded the codecs suggested and no luck. I tried to view a small mpeg file with both xine and mplayer and was able to see it but trying to view a dvd got me the blue screen. Yes, I have all the dvdcss stuff that allows me to read and play dvds and even copy them but cannot play on either Mplayer or Kaffeine or Gxine. I wonder if the driver for the intel 855GM video chip has changed. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Refresh my memory please: in your xorg.conf file, does it say you're using the "i810" or the "intel" driver? Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

B y the way - it could be worse. You could get the White Screen Of Death when running normal office applications... http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2007/20071129_vista_whitescreen.jpg That's on a new computer with 2G RAM, dual-core processor..... ...and yes I do have the CLI open there, too. :P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Joe, the .conf file has this: BoardName "855 GM" BusID "0:2:0" Driver "intel" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 VendorName "Intel" Wonder what happens if I change it? Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It might be worthwhile to change that to i810 and see how things run. The "intel" is a new driver and there are known issues. I'm using it here with no problems, but my chipset is older (945). I changed the BoardName to i810, restarted it and no change whatever. Still get the blue screen with great audio. Guess I'll have to use my imagination while playing dvds. Not my preferred solution. Thanks Joe, You got me on the right track! I changed the driver section to this: BoardName "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device" BusID "0:2:0" Driver "i810" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 VendorName "Intel" And it now works.
