Can anybody give me a hint, either why rpm2cpio is not working or how one can unpack a RPM file in other ways?
I would suggest using mc. This can enter and view the files inside the rpm, viewing not just the directory structure, but the init script itself.
Good idea, but mc doesn't support the new lzma compression either. I'll try the shell script next that Sylvester recommended. Currently it doesn't detect that this RPM has an lzma payload, maybe I can repair that. It does in 11.0.

There were upgraded packages for 10.3 somewhere, I think. You will find references in the factory list at the time 11.0 was in factory. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Try http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/coolo/openSUSE_10.3/ I can vaguely remember it being made available there when rpm was causing a problem, the versions seem higher than 11.0 even.
