and the new disk is number 3, hdd. I can not install grub there, nor can I use a boot partition there. I haven't tried lilo yet, but I might. I wonder if I could test lilo first without installing it.
The "funny" thing is that the bios does see that disk (although incorrectly). Even MsDOS 6.0 (yes, plain old dos) can boot from that disk.
That's stange Carlos.
I just installed 2 new 250G drives, installed 9.3 and Grub did just fine. Who knows......
It must be related to my bios, it's a triffle old (circa 2001), it thinks it is a 120 Gb disk (and it is 160). Linux sees it complete, no problem; I can even boot plain dos from it. But grub doesn't see it at all! I have my /boot partition on another HD, because till the kernel boots that HD is inexistent. - -- Saludos Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDanY4tTMYHG2NR9URAnghAKCBcd3gQXcysVsxG5/83og4ScsJLgCfXAeh J7y6tmxd2+ctN1cCy3CEJtY= =hM64 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I did do a fresh flash of the bios in order to handle the new drives. This is on an ABIT KT7 that has worked flawlessly for the past 5 years. If you can get a bios ugrade, give it a shot. -- David C. I know my board needs a bios update. It is a Microstar MS-6534. It came in two bios versions: award and ami. I have the award. There are only updates for the ami bios. End of story :-/ Unless somebody knows where MSI hides the updates for the award bioses... - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDbNAvtTMYHG2NR9URAk63AJ0Y/hSnaU4sFijbDFvd4T+FyLhQAwCghjaV tylUhwSmzQrWZXbRjDcAAXk= =Uwr1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
