Problem with Smart while "computing transaction"
Hi Today, I wanted to update my 10.0 to 10.1-rc1 using Smart package manager. I added the new channels (apt-rpm from ftp4.gwdg.de) and removed the old ones (expect suser-guru and kde3-stable as these are not available for 10.1 yet). Then I did "smart update". Went flawlessly. Next, I started "smart upgrade". Updating cache was normal, but at "computing transaction" smart starts using 100% CPU and computes all the deps for more than one (1) hour. But then, the upgrade started normal. Unfortunately, there was a download problem with the package "RealPlayer...", so after smart finished downloading, it stopped the upgrade process. I downloaded the file manually and put it into smarts package repo. But this is not my problem. The real problem is that I have to restart the upgrade. So, smart is now computing the transaction again. Do you know, what the problem could be? Shall I try it without the kde3-stable repo (= downgrading to 3.5.1)? Thanks for help, Dani

Then, once you get the main upgrade done, then try adding your kde3-stable repo.

This actually does not work either. If I try to do so with 'apt-get dist-upgrade' it seems to work, but deps are not resolved that well: The following packages will be REMOVED: amarok amarok-libvisual amarok-xine gimp gimp-cmyk k3b kdeaddons3-kate kdeaddons3-konqueror kdebase3 kdebase3-SuSE kdebase3-nsplugin kdebase3-session kdenetwork3-wireless kdepim3-networkstatus kdeutils3 kinternet koffice-illustration kpowersave libgpod submount It actually removes most KDE packages without installing new ones. So, I probably will have to reinstall the default packages using YaST. I will do that this night. We will see what happens. Thank you anyway, Dan

Thank you anyway, Dan yeah, with upgrades, that is the way that it goes sometimes. I've had to uninstall a lot of packages and reinstall them. You can get a list of

Good luck

With YaST it would be easier. Export package selection before upgrade, save on some place that would not be affected with installation, than on installation import the .sel file and it will automatically install all that was installed before. -- Regards, Rajko.

If your current system needs a 3rd party repo in order to complete the upgrade process, it's better that you leave this repo alone and try to solve the dependencies (or download errors) instead of dropping it and installing by hand. The given solution would bring you much more work thant running "smart upgrade --update" a few times. -- % Mauricio Teixeira (netmask) % mteixeira{a}webset{d}net <> Maceio/AL/BR % http://mteixeira.webset.net <> http://pmping.sf.net

You have two problems, and I could give you two possible solutions: problem#1 = smart takes time to compute the transaction problem#2 = the upgrade process stops after a download failure solution#1 = run smart in shell mode (smart --shell), this would solve problem#1 and problem#2 since the transaction would be computed only once (the first time you run upgrade it computes, then you run 'commit' and it starts downloading); in this case, if the download fails, you run 'commit' again and it continues from where it stopped without the need to recompute the transaction (this is the preferred solution) soliton#2 = in order to solve problem#2 for future upgrades, please contibute with your coments on this bug ticket -> http://tracker.labix.org/issue115 -- % Mauricio Teixeira (netmask) % mteixeira{a}webset{d}net <> Maceio/AL/BR % http://mteixeira.webset.net <> http://pmping.sf.net
