Hello,
I am recompiling a new 2.6.x kernel (Suse9.3) and I can't find how to create a new initrd*.img file. Any ideas?
How about: :~> man -k initrd initrd (4) - boot loader initialized RAM disk mk_initrd (8) [mkinitrd] - create initrd disk image mkinitrd (8) - create initrd disk image
My fault. I should have been more specific. I am not sure if I really need the initrd image. How can I tell? Thank you, ~James
Take a look at the file: /etc/sysconfig/kernel. The variable, INITRD_MODULE, contains the kernel modules that need to be loaded at boot time. One of them is most likely the file system module such as ext3 or reiserfs. If you build any of these items as modules in your new kernel, you will need to make the initrd. So most likely you will need it. -David On Friday 08 July 2005 07:00 pm, James D. Parra wrote:

Without initrd, you are likely to find some modules not loading, especially USB. # cd /boot # mkinitrd -k 2.6.x -i initrd-2.6.x -d /dev/hda1 -s 1024x768 /dev/hda1 is my root partition. Amend /boot/grub/menu.lst to cater for the new kernel and initrd. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Simply type "/sbin/mkinitrd" as root.
