[S.u.S.E. Linux] pppd damon crashing : can't get onto net
I'm using kppp (under KDE) in SuSE 5.2 to try and log onto the net (using PAP), but every time I connect I get a message saying 'pppd' crashed suddenly (or something to this effect). Any ideas? PS: I'm a newbie, and havn't been able to log onto the net at all under Linux. I configured (using YaST) my ISP information, for those who will ask this... ------------------------------------------------ Man's mind is his basic tool of survival! Any ideas? Hi Lawrence, I'll give you a list of possible problems to check, but I'm not sure what realy the problem could be since you don't give enough info about the configuration of Kppp... When the pppd deamon dies it could be due to: * Your connection sequence with your ISP isn't complete. Try to run Kppp manually - debug mode - with the terminal on so you can see what's happening. This will also help you put the right script together. * You don't have the correct path to the pppd deamon. Check this in Kppp. * You have stuff in /etc/ppp/options. This is most of the time the reason in Red Hat to kill the pppd deamon prematurely. Check the "options" file with a text editor and delete the entry you might find there. Most of the time it says "lock". * Does your ISP require a PAP authentication? Win 95 defaults to PAP, so most users don't even know they're using it. * Don't modify pppd arguments in Kppp if you don't know what you're doing. Zoki. This message is brought to you by Linux (2.0.31) and Pine, a text based UNIX e-mail client... % Fin de message / End of message % -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Another problem is not having the "ogin" right. Mine would go through the whole connect process then after about 30 seconds, it would break the connection. I was forgetting to put the "P" in front of my login name (i.e. Pjes, instead of jes). -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I'm a newbie too, but with help of some of the people on this mailing list I can connect to my ISP with either a chat script or kppp! First, when using kpp make sure the etc/ppp/options file is empty. kppp will not work right if this file has the entry "lock" , also make sure you set your ISP's name server and i.p. numbers using YAST (under system administration/network configuration/configuration nameserver) don't edit the usr/sbin/resolve.conf directly yourself, ignor the FAQs and HOWTOS on that. Also KDE has a pretty good help page for kpp at <A HREF="http://www.kde.org/documentation/en/applications/kppp/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.kde.org/documentation/en/applications/kppp/index.html</A">http://www.kde.org/documentation/en/applications/kppp/index.html</A</A>> Hope this helps Kristian Farren Lawrence Sayre wrote:
