Do the machines you use to connect provide the identd service, or is that service blocked somewhere in a firewall or something?
To be honest, I don't really know what the ident is for. I recently activated it, hoping it would solve (some of) the problem(s), but it didn't. Is identd responsible for reverse name lookups?
Try to telnet to port 113 of your host. If you get an instant connection, identd is less likely to be a problem. If it's blocked or waits a long time, that probably is your problem.
I conected to port 113. Nothing happens when I do nothing. If I type <ctrl>-D and [Enter], it returns a '0 , 0 : ERROR : UNKNOWN-ERROR' and disconnects. The syslogs says this: 'Dec 31 02:42:52 www identd[15313]: from: 212.187.108.92 (c187108092.telekabel.chello.nl) UNKNOWN REQUEST: ^[' Ergo: It CAN tell my hostname, but somehow it doesn't know what to do with it..? Then again, my syslog is full of things like: 'Dec 31 02:42:17 www popper[15317]: connect from 212.187.108.92'. The IP is actually c187108092.telekabel.chello.nl, mentioned in the message identd returned... This is a mystery to me.. Any suggestions? TIA!
