[SLE] Random X crashes on several computers (SUSE 9.0)
Hello, I'm at a loss with an X server problem... Mostly, I get random crashes, hard enough that I have to reboot (if I can) after each of them. They happen at any point, from two seconds to several hours after login. After a crash, there is not a single useful piece of information in /var/log/messages, except the usual "Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly". The only thing I can say is that the crash *seems* to happen when I launch an application (any application). I'm using SUSE 9.0. I had those crashes on my previous computer (Duron 1200, SB Live, GeForce 4 MX) but I was able to get rid of the problem by using the nv driver instead of the nvidia one. But with my new computer (Athlon 2500, SB Live, GeForce FX5200), it happens with both drivers, so I'm not sure it's a graphic-related problem. There is not a single piece of hardware in common with the previous computer, everything is new. I also tried on my server (Pentium II 333, Matrox G400) and the crash also happens. I tried to use both graphical drivers, removed APIC from kernel options, etc, to no avail. But when I'm in pure console mode (runlevel 3), I never get any crash. The crash happens on a vanilla SUSE 9.0 system as well as on an upgraded system (with supplementary and Packman packages). I haven't been able to find a parameter that makes the crash happen more or less often... Has anyone any hint about that? I'm completely lost, here... -- Thibaut Cousin Web : http://www.thibaut-cousin.net
Hi there, I had a similar problem some days ago with my SuSE 9.0, which I solved doing an on-line update using "YOU". HTH, Martin
