[S.u.S.E. Linux] Yast, ld.conf.so, and libraries?
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/f3fa15dd80a00876389319c56757ed36.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
Hello, I am new to linux, and have found YAST very helpful in getting me started. Now I went to install GIMP v1 and lesstif (I want to take a look at Mozilla), along with some GNOME stuff to try out. Both GIMP and GNOME need >= gtk1.01 so I installed the gtk1.0.4 rpm but nothing seems to find it on my system. The install directions mention editing /etc/ld.conf.so and running ldconfig. But yast warns not to edit ld.conf.so and instead edit ld.conf.so.in. Do I then just run ldconfig as I would otherwise? I must say, I am a bit confused over glib and libc5... Does that mean that rpm for redhat 5 or later will not work on SuSE? I installed the GNOME rpms and their suport files because I wanted to take a look at it. Now SuSE does not ship with (I don't think) mico and guile and all those other libraries. Can I still install them, or are they incompatible with my system. (BTW I am running SuSE 5.2) Now if I run ldconfig I get "warning: can't open /usr/lib/libImlib.so (No such file or directory), skipping warning: can't open /usr/lib/ligdk_imlib.so (No such file or directory) skipping" Yast gives similar messages (I suppose it is runing ldconfig in the setup) I know I've put out a lot of questions. Just to recap... Do rpms for Redhat 5 not work with SuSE? Should I make a habit of downloading the source code? Can SuSE users not use things like GNOME or GIMP v1 because of the the libraries? Using SuSE do you still follow directions saying to edit ld.conf.so files or not? If anybody can start explaining all this new stuff to me, I'd be much appreciated. rpms for redhat 5.0 or greater are generally not compatible with SuSE as SuSE is based on libc5 and redhat is glibc. Make additions to /etc/ld.so.conf.in and then run SuSEconfig. Getting gnome to compile on a libc5 based system nearly takes an act of god. Either that or gnome is just a long ways off from being ready for the end user. I have it running on my box but I really had to hack to get it compiled, and I used three different compilers (I recommend egcs 1.0.3a if you are masochist enough to try). Hopefully SuSE will be glibc soon ( ;) ) so that won't be an issue. Until then, enjoy kde and pretend it's gnome. Not that there is anything wrong with kde, I just think having a desktop environment that is window manager dependent is a move in the wrong direction. Gnome will be present in the future of the xdesktop whether you like it or not IMO, so at least you are granted the freedom to choose your own window manager with it. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Yes and I'll be glad to wait till all the problems that Red Hat has experienced are overcome. SuSE 6.0 is purported to be glibc and out this year. Bodo and Hubert have been saying late summer/early fall all along on SuSE 6.0, if indeed 6.0 is released instead of a libc5 based 5.3. How do you come across your information Fred? It's irresponsible to say 6.0 will be out next month unless you know with certainty that that is the case. I wish SuSE would open 6.0 up for beta testing. SuSE would benefit from the bug reports and those of us itching for a development version of 6.0 would get our wish. A win-win situation. ======================================================================= "I was playing poker the other night ... with Tarot cards. I talked with them Friday, and was told that it was going to ship in July. I ordered 5.2 anyway. 'Careful about the use of the term "irresponsible" when you don't know the situation. I called the 888-* number off the SuSE web site to order. It was from the rep. I talked to. Fred TEX wrote:

I don't have it, no. The fellow I talked to said he hadn't been there very long. I was pressed for time, so I didn't get into details of what the new version improvements are. I talked to enough people using SuSE who are also familur with Red Hat, who all gave me ample reasons to get SuSE rather than Red Hat that I just ordered what was currently available. Greetings, everyone! Sorry for the confusion on release dates. I received a report today from the developers on what's happening. We will release 5.3 in mid to late August. This is in synch with our normal release schedule, since we try for 3 releases per year. There will be a 6.0 beta in late September and an official release in November, which will be at last glibc. I will divulge more as I know it! Thanks for your patience! Sincerely, James Gray
