Hi! Is it possible to upgrade from suse7.3 to 8.1 (or 8.2 soon) or would I have to install suse8.1(8.2) as if I had no suse7.3 installed? What would happen to my packages? Would I have to install and recompile everything again? I have a kernel that was compiled with some "particular" options, would I have to compile the kernel again? What's the name of the file keeping the actual options (I presume I would have to create a backup copy)? Thanks! Yes, because 8.1+ use the new gcc.

Yes, see above, and because a stock kernel isn't going to have your options...
What's the name of the file keeping the actual options (I presume I would have to create a backup copy)?
Er, dunno that one... Dylan -- "Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars" Billy Bragg

Yes; but do make a good backup first. If you have more than one linux partition, watch carefully what the installer (yast) says it is going to use, and make sure there is enough space free. My update failed because of that. If it fails, then recover any thing you need from the backup, and retry or install 8.1 from scratch. It should work, but it might fail: so do have a backup.
What would happen to my packages?
Those that are included on the CD would be updated, the rest you would would be notified; normally they are left alone.
Would I have to install and recompile everything again?
Not necesarily. I'm still using applications I compiled myself on suse 7.1 or earlier. You might have problems with apps using C++, I think (some changes on gcc 3.2)
I have a kernel that was compiled with some "particular" options, would I have to compile the kernel again?
Yes, if you want those options.
What's the name of the file keeping the actual options
Of the kernel? "/usr/src/linux/.config".
(I presume I would have to create a backup copy)?
Yes; on your /root directory would be the best place, with another name, like kernel_config_version_date
Thanks!
