[opensuse] Kmail locking pc
Has anyone found a way of stopping Kmail from locking the PC up ? I am running SuSE 10.2 (32 bit) on an Asus M2V-MX with 1 gig DDR2 533 ram with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+. Using a GeForce 7300 LE with 256 meg of ram on board. 2 IDE hard drives and a SATA DVD RW. Since updating my motherboard and CPU from an AMD 2400XP with 1 gig of ram on a SIS chipset motherboard KMail locks up the PC. I can not see any pattern to the lockups. I have left the PC when KMail locks up to see if the PC will come back to me but even after leaving it for 8 hours over night the PC is still locked up. The only way to gain control again is by shutting down and rebooting (reset button) This is a fresh install not an update. -- Kindest regards, Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. There was a known problem recently with an update of KMail. It was spawning threads and taking a large chunk of process/user time. Did you do the latest updates after you installed? -- kai ponte www.perfectreign.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes I did an update after the new installation. Is this suppose to stop the lockups ? I will check for new updates. -- Kindest regards, Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. I'm not sure if I understand that you changed something in the hardware setup; if so, then may kmail is just triggering a hardware problem, like bad memory, for instance. You could check it with memtest from the boot menu. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I left memtest running over night and it came back with good memory. Yes I had to update my motherboard which in turn means I had to update my CPU and memory. Doing this I did a re-install of OpenSuSE 10.2. I then did the online update. This morning I found the PC again locked up but this time KMail was not running. So I have another problem somewhere. -- Kindest regards, Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. I have seen KDE locking up randomly every once in a while. The only discernible pattern I've observed is that a Qt app needs to be running and updating the display in one way or another. Mouse or keyboard input on a Qt app can also cause this, which may also have to do with things having to be drawn. Logs never catch anything. Total, dead freeze. I've seen these on various hardware since SUSE 9.1. 8.1 and 8.2 were the only SUSEs that never froze. I've never seen this happen on a GTK app. I've used various graphics cards, motherboards, memory, X and ATI drivers. No difference. Memtests etc. come out clean. I've been thinking of going to GNOME or even another distro, but the freezes have been quite rare and infrequent, so have not bothered. Maybe when I upgrade hardware the next time. As readers of this list know, a whole while ago I had problems with KMail 10.0 producing output in something that looked like Chinese. I am now running 9.3, and KMail works perfectly--knock on wood! I am watching the 10.3 reports very closely, as the 9.3 is pretty choosy as to the printers it will print to, and I have to go to Windows, generally, to print, and I'm not smart enough to network the machines. (I email to myself.) I use KDE, and if I had to use GNOME, I'd find another distro. As this goes to "print," does anyone know if the Brother HL-2040 is supported out of the box, in 10.3? There is supposed to be a driver, which I think I downloaded, but I don't know how to make it work. --doug -- Blessed are the peacemakers ... for they shall be shot at from both sides. --A.M. Are you writing from the far distant future? I run SuSE Linux 10.0, with various KDE updates of which I've long lost track (it reports itself as 3.5.5 "release 45.2"), and the KMail version I'm using to reply now is 1.9.5.

Hi, I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what freezes my system too. And my hardware is similar to yours: Motherboard: Asus A8n32-SLI DELUXE AMD Athlon 64 DualCore 4500+. 2 Gb RAM Graphic Card: GeForce 7300 LE. 2 Sata drivers 1 IDE DVD RW openSUSE 10.4 x86_64 (nvidia driver) All begun after update from 10.2 to 10.3 The symphtoms are: Working in KDE the system sometimes slow a lot during few seconds and then restart the normal activity. But sometimes it does not return anymore and the system freezes definetively. A pair of times directly the system restarts :-( I've checking the memory, it seems OK. No logs in any /var/log file telling that someting is malfunctioning. I'm worried about that. The system is a server running 24/7 and this failure is giving me a headache. I had to left it running in console mode to avoid it. No problems out of X. It never failed with 10.2, with uptimes above 60 days. I'm beginning to think in a problem with the graphic card and the nvidia-module. Any other user suffering similar problems? Guillermo El Monday 08 October 2007 22:49:18 Clive Rogers escribió:

I have since updated my system from my first post and now run the Graphic Card: GeForce 7300 LE and am still getting a couple of lockups a day. So I installed 10.3 X64 and still getting the lockups even while not running KMail. I have tried turning off the APM and ACPI but this has made no difference. I have also updated the programs via YAST. Not tried the new kernel but keeping an eye on the post. Never had this problem with my old motherboard (Asrock) and AMD 2400+ XP chip running SuSE 10.0 -- Kindest regards, Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. I've suffered today another crash. The graphic card seems the culprit (or an unknown problem with X) . When I began to see pages with many flashes, rapid changes or similar, it hangs Grrrr. No crash or slowdown running in console mode. Guillermo

There seems to be a number of problems with KDE PIM including a bug I filed at bugzilla at http://pim.kde.org/development/bugs.php , bug number 150740, relating to kmail seeming to freeze when selecting folders. This particular bug appears to happen in Mandriva installs as well as OpenSuse, so it's possible your problem is not Suse related. -- Bob Smits bob@rsmits.ca Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn't have in your home...David Frost -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
