Don't say "even as root". As root you don't get permissions on that directory. It is the gnome vfs directory, fuse mounted, and root has no access. You can only see that directory as root when gvfs-fuse-daemon hasn't mounted it, but then of course it is empty. Those are non-local user files, and the local admin shouldn't be nosy :)

Does the user who is running gvfs-fuse-daemon?
