Yes, Netscape creates some temp files in /tmp that need to be deleted. I forget the name that they are created under..just hunt about in /tmp..shouldn't be much to check through.
-**-When I came back to NS 4.75 and 4.76, neither will start. From console -**-I get the message "Bus Error" and back to the prompt. -**-

Quite possibly the most annoying thing about NS is that bug.
/tmp/ndebug is the trouble maker, or atleast was on my system, I don't know how safe it was, but I made it global writable and the problem stopped.
This is not an NS bug - It is a genuine SuSE packaging bug (Check this list's archive for "plugger" for details).
Prolly a bad Idea, but if theres another fix, please lemme know. Updating your plugger package might help, if it is the /tmp/* file issue.
If not, try starting NS as /opt/netscape/netscape instead of using SuSE's netscape wrapper. The wrapper is broken for quite a while and nobody seems have cared of been able fixing it.
Yes, Netscape creates some temp files in /tmp that need to be deleted. Nope, it is the plugger package creating these files, because it is compiled with debugging on.

I wasn't using the wrapper. But thanks to all of you, it is now fixed. plugger.so was in ~/.netscape, so I removed it and NS now works. What is the correct way to get plugger to work Ed Harrison SuSE 6.4, Kernel 2.2.16, IBM JDK 1.1.8 (20000713) PBM 1.1.18

I've never had a problem with Netscape on SuSE but I had this problem
on my Slackware box.
I could run netscape with plugger installed as my user and root but no
other user could use netscape.
I took out plugger.so until I could have time to figure it out.
Seeing this thread I changed the perms on /tmp/ndebug to root.users 660.
Now everyone can run it just fine.

The second time I ran into bus errors was even more frustrating. I had just upgraded my 6.3 installation to 7.0 and netscape to 4.75. Netscsape would not start for any user. It would simply give a bus error. I tried a couple of the suggestions I had seen on this list including deleting cache files and *not* using the SuSE Netscape startup script. None of these helped. I finally renamed my /opt/netscape to /opt/netscape.old (just so I could preserve the problem installation) directory and reinstalled the nescape rpm. My problem went away. I had the same plugins in both installations I have not compared the two netscape installations in detail to see what the exact differences are.
Please let me know if either of these suggestions helps you out

A general approach to unwanted stuff in /tmp is to wipe it at shut down. I've added these three lines to /sbin/init.d/halt.local wipe -IfRsez /tmp mkdir /tmp chmod 777 /tmp There is a little twist to it. Sometimes you have to restart the X-server immediately after boot. The symptoms are that certain programs may not be able to execute. A restart of the X-server is a small price to pay for this security. Then possible shit being installed in /tmp by java or otherwise during a surfing session won't have any effect at boot time. Cheers, Niels
