Another strange problem that has occurred after upgrading my system from v9.0 to v9.3. In 9.1 I could access Igor, a MS XP box on my LAN via either Krusader or Konqueror via Samba and/or LinNeighborhood. Up until today, the linux browser could only see some of the MS directories that were accessable in 9.0 - strange point number one. For some reason, starting with a fresh boot this morning the browsers now see none of the MS directories. LinNeighborhood used to work, in 9.0, with out complaint. No more! It can see all of the direcories on the XP machine, but when I attempt to mount one I get: smbmount //IGOR/P /root/mnt/IGOR/P/ -o username=Administrator%*****,fmask=644,dmask=755,uid=0,gid=0,ip=,debug=0,workgroup=ffc,port=139 Can't resolve address I have acccepted all of the defaults for LinNeighborhood. Neither of the machines is behind a dedicated firewall as I depend on the routher firewall. This situation puts a serious crimp in my research as I routinely move files between the machines. I don't have the faintest idea as to what is going on and will appreciate any and all assistance. Thanks in advance -- Stephen P. Do you have one nic or more? This problem is common with more than one. The designations change. Eth0 and eth1 change around so internal becomes external. There are a number of solutions. The one I used was to activate swat and under global set the device to the address of the internal device. Chris

I only have one nic, a NetGear FA311. I'll take a look at swat. -- Stephen P. Molnar, Ph.D. Life is a fuzzy set Foundation for Chemistry Stochastic and multivariant http://www.geocities.com/FoundationForChemistry

Is the samba name daemon running? Check with "rcnmb status", start it with "rcnmb start" if it isn't, then try again
Well, that was almost a red-faced forehead slapper, except - - - - after I started the samba name daemon I managed to logon to one of the WinXP directories once!!!! Then I logged off and attempted to log back on to the same directory and got a Can't resolve address error message. I have, however, made a small amount of progress. Thanks to another suggestion I downloaded WinSCP and installed on the WinXP machine. So now I can move files form the win machine to the linux machine, and vice versa, on the XP machine. The only energy barrier left is from linux to XP. Please keep the suggestions coming. Thanks in advance On Sunday May 15, 2005 04:44 pm, Anders Johansson wrote:

Check if perhaps the nmb daemon is crashing for some reason. If you do "rcnmb status", does it still say "Running"?

No, that doesn't crash the nmb daemon. -- Stephen P. Molnar, Ph.D. Life is a fuzzy set Foundation for Chemistry Stochastic and multivariant http://www.geocities.com/FoundationForChemistry
This morning I made an interesting discovery. If I am logged on as root (yes, I know, I don't like it either), and I enter: 'mount -t smbfs //IGOR/O /root/mnt/IGOR/O/' and, of course, enter the correct XP password I can access the XP files from the linux machine Why can't I do this as a user? More importantly, what do I have to change to enable the process as a user? On Sunday May 15, 2005 05:04 pm, Stephen P. Molnar, Ph.D. wrote:

Only root can run the mount command. Have a look at /etc/samba/smbfstab to have windows shares mount at boot time. That's not really true. Entries in /etc/fstab may include the option "user" which makes it possible for non-privileged users to mount and unmount the device / file system described by that entry and the related "ower" option, which makes it possible for the device owner to mount it. Man 5 fstab for details.

Thanks for the suggestion. It works, sort of .................... Let me attempt to explain. First of all, the entry that I made in /etc/samba/smbfstab is //IGOR /home/computation/mnt/Igor username=XXXXXXX,password=YYYY My first concern is whether the entries are correct, or if I need an entry for every directory on IGOR (that's the XP machine, incidentially) Then, just to be sure, I rebooted the machine and logged on as the user computation. Much to my pleasant surprise, the Krusader file manager listed all of the directories to be found on IGOR. IGOR has HD (there are 3 HD's) directories going from C through P. D through P have been set to shared. Directories G through P are accessable from the linux machine, but D and E are not. I can see LAN activity on gKrellM, but neither of those directories open, nor does the attempt time out. In actuality the only directory to which I need frequent access is F/Fortran. So, as a work around, I thought that I would must copy Fortran to O. One little problem with this work around, it doesn't work. I get the same behavior if I use Konqueror as root. I used to be able to access all of the shared directories on IGOR. At this point, I am ready to lose what little hair I have left. On Monday May 16, 2005 08:38 am, Ken Schneider wrote:
