Is there a required minimum memory for openSUSE 64 bits installation ? I am trying to install openSUSE in VirtualBox, but with 128 MB of RAM the installation fails. on 64 bits I don't know, but on 32, 256 is a bare minimum.
on virtual, better give 512 and reduce after jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You _can_ get away with less, but you'll need swap-space. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-1.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wonder if there is a way to start the installation using the minimum of resources. Installing an embedded Linux works on 128MB or less, so why not the same for a major Linux distribution. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Generally speaking, because openSUSE (the major Linux distribution) was not designed/intended to be run on a resource-limited embedded platform. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-1.8°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Actually we got the memory requirement pretty low for 11.0 & 11.1. I think you could run an installation with somewhat less than 256 MB without swap. It is not exactly clear why 11.2 needs noticably more memory. IIRC not even 512 MB are enough in some cases. The sad fact is, however, that the install environment is slowly but constantly increasing from release to release for mainly two reasons: (a) the number of kernel modules increases and (b) the installer requires more tools and shared libs. It is extremely time consuming to keep that growth to a minimum and frankly I don't see the need for that in a mainstream distribution. People that notice are typically doing some VM installation and there you could just add more memory with a mouse click. That said, if anyone cares enough to actually do something about it: patches are always welcome. I've done 11.2 installations with 128Mb + swap.

Per, How did you manage to install into 128 MB of RAM? Just curious... Because if I remember correctly the installer quits if you have less than 512 MB. Do you select some special option(s) to go forward? Thanks. Boris. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Boris AFAIR, it was a normal installation on a Pentium90 with 128MB + swap. I'll have to double check that it was in fact 11.2 and not an earlier 11.x. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-1.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi. Not 64 bit, but I can get 1Gb ddr2 memory for 23 euros for my old dell gx's. It's not worth struggling with less. On a production lan, the time it will save you is more than worth it. While a very cool goal to achieve technically, there is no money on it ;-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
