[S.u.S.E. Linux] SuSE 5.3

reposting cause of netscape screwed up my message with line returns that I did not put there :( I would deleate the old msg myself but it didn't work ---------------------------------- Why SuSE 5.3? I can't imagine what the differences that SuSE 5.3 will have over 5.2 SuSE. Only reason I see that SuSE 5.3 will be released is their dedication to release a new SuSE every 4 months or so. Which by it-self has me wondering, do I really need 5.3? (yes I am on the subscribe to SuSE updates). I would really like not to be the "last one on the block" to be able to use one new feature such as glibc2. I know maybe the delay is for maybe to be able to put in 2.2.0 Kernel with the SuSE 6.0 as they just released 2.1.105 with HAM radio drivers (which is to me looking like they about finished with the 2.1.XX development)=(they throwing all the bells and whistles in). I would very much like to figure out how to tweak my current box to support the now linux standard of glibc2. Everything is going that way, why wait. Linux is for testing/haveing fun/tweaking/hacking you name it. Seeing the RH users having fun/trubbles with it, and seeing Debian get tons of support + having their beta 2.0 called HAMM is getting me jealous. Kernel 2.0.34 is out and stable from what I have heard, SuSE "heavly - patches" thier Kernels, so in waiting for SuSE to update thier ftp site with .34, I am wonder what they patch exacly to make it thier own version of the Kernel thus making it un-pactchable by some of the standard patches for the Linux Kernels, this is fustrating. I could use a standard-out-of-the-box Kernel source-tree, I have before, so I am wondering as stated above what makes the -suse kernels so different/ should I wait? I did notice that most distros have to append LILO if they have over 32Megs of RAM but I have never had that problem. I really enjoy SuSE, it is keeping pretty much standard to the Linux community. Unlike lets say Red Hat, which strays by putting in thier "easy-to-use-config" programs which are not standard, and making people who help RH users "Have" to be Red Hat users themselfs. But RH over all is a good distro as all of them are. This is not over the .rpm management program. Steve Udell hettar@teleport.com sudell@teleport.com So does SuSE have a wish list, to like make comments on what they should have on a up-and-comming distro of thiers? if so where do I find it? -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I for one would love to see a wish list for 5.3 and (eventually) 6.0. There's been a lot of traffic on the major *nix download sites over the last few months, and most of the software in the principal SuSE packages have received updates of one kind or another. This ML might be one avenue to open up the forum for suggestions for 5.3, if users are in agreement. -- Glenn -- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

OK, here's what I think SuSE would benefit from including. I'm leaving out glibc and gnome, but those would be #1 of course. I hope SuSE's relationship, if any, with kde doesn't keep them from backing gnome. After a month of getting the gnome mailing list I can honestly say I'm excited about the prospects. Never have I seen such an active and productive list. You can't help but feel that gnome will be important in the future of the linux desktop.: 1. StarOffice- this is free, unlike Corel and Applix, and a nice office suite to boot. Does Stardivision have an agreement with Caldera that prevents other dists from including it? 2. Automake 1.3 3. Libtool 1.2 4. Xenon- an excellent and lightweight text editor for x...think notepad for linux. Very cool. 5. Poptart- a POP mail retrieval program that is infinitely easier for linux newbies to figure out compared to the included alternatives. 6. TkMount- a neat little gui interface to mounting cd, floppy, zip. 7. Playmidi and Xplaymidi- still the best linux midi players. 8. Games Doom Xmame- the best emulator is finally as good in linux as in win95. 9. BitchX- the world's greatest irc client. Everyone uses this, but I've never seen it in a dist. Why? 10. x11amp and amp- We all use mp3s, right? 11. Netscape plugins- mpegtv.so, xanim.so and ump.so/timidity.tar. These are useful plugins, and in the case of timidity.tar would save the customer a 9 mb download. 12. pppd-2.3.3 13. Xmftp-1.0.4- The best ftp client for x. 14. egcs-1.0.3a- gcc-2.7.2.1 is more reliable than gcc-2.8.x, but I'm starting to run into apps that need a newer gcc. egcs-1.0.3a compiles everything I've tried, where gcc-2.8.x unexpectedly bails on some stuff. 15. neXtaw- because NeXT is the most elegant gui devised by man and SuSE already includes tkstep so why not? Sorry for the long post, I'm sure I forgot a bunch of stuff. misc.word.corp wrote:

I agree.
1. StarOffice- this is free, unlike Corel and Applix, and a nice office suite to boot. Does Stardivision have an agreement with Caldera that prevents other dists from including it?
I believe that Caldera *does* have an exclusive with them. Also, it's not "free" for commercial use so I think Star Division only wants to deal with distributors on a royalty basis per copy that they sell so that they are assured of the revenue from companies that buy the Linux distro (ie if a company pays $50 for a Linux distro and SO is on there they are going to assume they can just use it and not pay).
2. Automake 1.3 3. Libtool 1.2
You want those so you can build Gnome. :-)
4. Xenon- an excellent and lightweight text editor for x...think notepad for linux. Very cool.
Got a URL handy?
5. Poptart- a POP mail retrieval program that is infinitely easier for linux newbies to figure out compared to the included alternatives.
Is it easier than fetchmail? I can't imagine it is unless it includes a GUI for setup or something. Care to give us a comparison?
8. Games Doom
Doom can't be shipped in Germany. It's illegal.
Xmame- the best emulator is finally as good in linux as in win95.
Well, of course I'm speaking for RH here, but Xmame is dangerous at best. For one, to come close to legally shipping it you can't ship any ROM images. That makes it pretty useless without the user having to go download stuff anyway (and at that point they could just download Xmame while they're at it). For another, it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Sure, I'm in the US so we have to be more scared of that than in most other *sane* places, but...
9. BitchX- the world's greatest irc client. Everyone uses this, but I've never seen it in a dist. Why?
The name? ;-)
10. x11amp and amp- We all use mp3s, right?
Again, legal issues. The MP3 format is patented and at least under the law of many countries (the US included and SuSE does have a US office so they have to consider this) it is illegal to ship it without paying royalty. Read the MP3 FAQ for details. Personally, I say boycott MP3 and develop a competing standard. That implies the folks who care have the knowledge and time to do it, though. :-(
13. Xmftp-1.0.4- The best ftp client for x.
That's motif based, though, right? Does it work with lesstif?
14. egcs-1.0.3a- gcc-2.7.2.1 is more reliable than gcc-2.8.x, but I'm starting to run into apps that need a newer gcc. egcs-1.0.3a compiles everything I've tried, where gcc-2.8.x unexpectedly bails on some stuff.
Yep, egcs is the way to go.
15. neXtaw- because NeXT is the most elegant gui devised by man and SuSE already includes tkstep so why not?

Much like fetchmail. I like it better, just my preference. When I first got into linux I didn't know fetchmail was in my dist, sendmail made my head swim, and I downloaded poptart and I've just used it ever since. Poppy is a cool perl script for browsing mail on your pop server but it is no replacement for pine/elm/mutt and the pop retrieval tool of your choice.

I'm hoping they put WM in the next dist too, as I like it much better than AS. If they do, hopefully they'll do the version just before the last release (was it beta?? ) which, I have but didn't build, just cause I think the version I had ( the one just prior to that) was just 'bout bug free and a pleasure to look at/use on the rare occasion I'm actually in X. As far as WM being difficult, I started with AS and I find WM much simpler to use than AS (especially the latest versions of AS, and as a matter of personal preference find it prettier than AS *or* E---which is a bit much on the eyes at times and garish). Re mail. I have to agree Sendmail can make your hair turn white especially when you're just starting out. Fetchmail is awesome, I really like it. Poppy is limited. I will have to try this Poptart program you mentioned once I find out where it is (when in doubt try Freshmeat first :-) ) If we are really talking 'mail fro newbies' here, it might be a nice innovation to have a part of YaST that does mail configuration...(many people are on single user stations and just using an ISP to send and recieve mail and this probably wouldn't be very difficult.) I'm actually surprised no one has done it yet on a dist. (or maybe someone has and I don't know about it.) One thing I'd like to see also in the SuSE dist is the contributed RPM stuff that was discussed recently on this list. She said: "You know you aren't a very good singer..." I said: "That's nothing!! You should hear me play piano !!" Morrissey On Tue, 9 Jun 1998, Michael Lankton wrote:

I don't think the xanim sources on the SuSE cds have the objects that enable cinepak and indeo support, so here is the url for the xanim page: <A HREF="http://xanim.va.pubnix.com/home.html"><A HREF="http://xanim.va.pubnix.com/home.html</A">http://xanim.va.pubnix.com/home.html Xanim is a case where reading the documentation pays off. You must edit the Makefile to get the proper vid support and audio, but I have used xanim for some time, and the new quicktime3 format is the only thing I found that it won't play. It also does .wav and .fli as well as .avi, .mov, .mpg (mpegtv is MUCH better for mpeg though) and probably others. As for plugging a WM binary into 5.3, I second the motion, most definitely! I agree -- WM is far more configure-friendly than AS -- that is, once you adjust to the convoluted directory tree that compiling the binary leaves on the system. As far as eye-candy goes, thanks to OctoberX and the Themes.org people, my desktop is visually refreshing to an extent not possible with Enlightenment. (Note the word "refreshing" -- Enlightenment, though cool when you launch it, seems to exert a dragging effect on my brain (not to mention system) with its dark color scheme.) Still, I wouldn't mind seeing the new, started-from-scratch version of Enlightenment make its way into 5.3 -- but I doubt if developers Mandrake and Rasterman will get it out in time to burn into the CD. Sounds good to me, Glenn. My wish list would begin by wishing for: latest version of PPP (2.3.3) compiled with the latest stable kernel (2.0.34) Most current version of lib5 and ld.so. A YAST tool for greater control of your windowmanager selection and (dare I hope) even control of windowmanager layout. Most current versions of bind, gcc, libg++ etc. (development tools) Automated PPP connection configuration w/YAST misc.word.corp wrote:
I for one would love to see a wish list for 5.3 and (eventually) 6.0. There's been a lot of traffic on the major *nix download sites over the last few months, and most of the software in the principal SuSE packages have received updates of one kind or another.
This ML might be one avenue to open up the forum for suggestions for 5.3, if users are in agreement.

I'd like better Matrox drivers. The Mill. II drivers are fine for text, menus and such, but photos are grainy. Apparently the driver isn't able to provide the color depth needed. Fred -- Fred A. I understand as "only the experienced walk with a limp" :) I mark my purchase of AcceleratedX as the top upgrade to a stock Linux box. There is only 2 commercial "must haves" in my book and they are AccelX and OSS. I'm sitting at 1600x1200 at 24bpp and with the Millenium married to a ViewSonic 20" monitor, it sure is nice. I have used metrox, accelx and xfree, and it must just depend on what card you use. I currently have an s3, and I get the best results from the SuSE xfree xs3v server. As far as sound goes, I don't think James cares what drivers you use :). oss is pretty much for people whose sound card isn't supported by the kernel drivers, otherwise sound is sound. First of all, sound really does like to be a module. I couldn't get sound up when I first got into linux. I read some awe32 how to that said sound HAD to be done as a module, tried that, and voila, sound. If you aren't getting midi even after compiling a new kernel with sound as a module, chmod +x /dev/sequencer, it might be that simple. good luck Steven Udell wrote:
