Hi all, I'm fond of the fortune program and would like to make my own file of quotations, but don't know how. Any tips? Read man fortune, then look at /usr/share/fortune. You should be able to figure it out. There are some pre-made alternative "fortune packs" out there. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I did. The problem seems to be that S.u.S.e does not ship strfile with 5.3. So, I'll have to get the complete fortune-mod* and install from scratch (someone told me that strfile is supposed to come with fortune). Yes, I looked at it closer. I thought you could just substitute your fortune lines, for those in the fortune file. I think you probably could get away with it. But I guess that .dat file keeps track of things and there needs to be a fortune + fortune.dat pairing. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

No, that won't work. The strfile util goes through the input file (with the fortunes) and produces an output file to make each fortune randomly accessible. Someone in my local lug (SSLUG) helped me, and even sent me a patch and .spec file so I could make an rpm of the fortune-mod* tarball. I'm a fortunate man. Well , I see the value of knowing the fortune program. :-) So I tracked it down to <A HREF="http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/games/amusements/fortune/fortune-mod-9708.tar.gz"><A HREF="http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/games/amusements/fortune/fortune-mod-9708.tar.gz</A">http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/games/amusements/fortune/fortune-mod-9708.tar.gz</A</A>> Lets see.... maybe a set of "Confuscious says...." - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

That's strange and a question for SuSE: Why do you mess with the source, making crippled applications? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I think if you look in the source package (I forget the letter designation - z?) there are the full sources including strfile, I use 5.2 but I would expect it to be in 5.3 -Mick- -- Mick Gower Indian Recipes - <A HREF="http://www.dexter.demon.co.uk/india"><A HREF="http://www.dexter.demon.co.uk/india</A">http://www.dexter.demon.co.uk/india</A</A>> "I can explain it in Dog, but you only listen in Human." -- Gaspode the wonder dog (Terry Pratchett, Moving Pictures) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
