RE: [SLE] Novell acquisition - let's take our paranoid hats off
Hmmm. Another content-free panic from "SuSE Ground Zero". Given the timing of the appearance of this name, you'd think it was made up just for this event. Take the tinfoil hat off and, to borrow your words, "cut the crap". This has just been announced and there's a long way to go before SuSE is declared dead - if that even happens. BTW, why would Microsoft be behind this? Novell have been the business equivalent of sworn enemies of Microsoft for years. Think about what you are saying... I'm with Fergus W on this. Wait and see. Folks, let's hold off the RIP SUSE and "let's find a new distro" posts, and look at this through mature eyes for a moment shall we?
The acquisition by Novell of SUSE, should it go through potentially represents a massive investment into Linux/Free Software development, Novell are paying $210m in cash for SUSE - they're not short of a few bob. At the same time, IBM (remember them?) are investing some $50m in Novell.
Here we have a GNOME-focused (Novell own Ximian) company buying a KDE-focused company. The potential here is that for the first time we'll have a commercial Linux distribution where the two major desktop environments in the Free Software world are equal partners, complimenting each other in the distribution, rather than one being pushed at the expense of the other.
Here's a great quote from the Press Release:
"Novell is firmly committed to open standards and maintaining the existing open source kernel development efforts. From advocacy and development resources to events and support of open source efforts like kernel projects, XFree86, ReiserFS, KDE, GNOME and Mono, Novell stands side-by-side with the open source community."
There's a certain other three-letter company who are trying to kill the open source kernel development efforts, Novell potentially provide muscle to fight SCO alongside IBM.

Indeed. Pure, undisguised trolling.

James did not write that. The statement above was by SuSE Ground Zero [mailto:suse@aspec.ro] and he just happened to insert it under the James Ogley wrote: line. Re-read the message and make sure you don't misquote anyone. D.C.

My mistake. Sorry, I missed your humor. I'm a little slow this morning. :-[ D.C.

I think there is some good and bad here. Remember that Novell bought
Unix from AT&T and sold the trademark to the OpenGroup. This allowed
systems that did not have AT&T kernels (such as OSF systems) to be
branded Unix if they complied with the X/Open standards. On the
downside, Novell also indirectly caused the current SCO crap by selling
the Unix code to SCO (and actually Caldera was essentially a Novell
spinoff).
The problem in the commercial Linux market is there is essentially 2
viable enterprise Linux systems, Red Hat and SuSE.
This acquisition firmly puts SuSE into the US enterprise because of both
Novell and IBM support.
The bottom line for SuSE is that it is a good move. However, I'm note
sure it is a good move for the personal desktop users who want a good
solid desktop system in that SuSE could follow Red Hat out of the
personal desktop market. However, that would leave Debian, Slackware,
Gentoo, Mandrake and a few others in the personal market. I would hope
that SuSE remains committed to the personal desktop market.

I think in spite of some arguing and bickering we're all saying and wanting the same thing. SuSE is the BMW of Linux distros. Well engineered, easy to use, and none of us want that to go away at the price point we're used to paying. And should SuSE pull it it seems like many of us will go away. The problem is to where? Mandrake bites. Slackware and Debian are obviously not good choices in terms of "ease of use" if you like to manage stuff via Yast, etc. That's why all we can do is hope Novell is paying attention and realizes that they essentially have this market cornered if they want it. But if they try to milk it for more money they'll lose many of us. Not sure to whom yet, but it will happen. Anyway, I played around with FreeBSD some this last week. I still like it a lot and it's always an option, but Linux is light years ahead in terms of pthread support, stuff like that. And impossible to get my modem working, something that was easy in SuSE under Yast. So I'm sticking for now. Hoping that Novell doesn't force us to leave the fold. Preston

Wasn't it? I haven't seen this name before. I was a little curious so I searched my SuSE list folder and didn't find from May until now. Why does "SuSE Ground Zero" have to hide behind a name? Damon Register
