Hi. I use SuSE 8.0, and have problems sending mails from Kmail set up to use SMTP. My SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST is set to the smtp of my ISP's. The SENDMAIL_ARGS is set to the default when SuSE 8.0 is installed. I can ping localhost as well as 127.0.0.1 What could be the reason ?. Hm, ok. I didn't realize you had a local sendmail server running. Is there a specific reason for that? It seems easier to just enter your ISPs smtp server in kmails settings. In any case, could you try to find a log entry relating to one of the mails you've tried to send? These log entries all seem to be from root@ to root@. They look like mails sent by SuSEconfig, or possibly cron.
Is there a Kmail log to be found somewhere ???.
Not as such, but you may find some logging in $HOME/.xsession-errors //Anders

I do have a webhotel, and this could be the reason. Then I enter my ISP's smtp server in the smarthost in sendmail.

Well I will try it, but its difficult I think. The messages are placed in the outbox in Kmail, as they due to one or more reasons cannot be sent.

Ok.

Just look for a log entry where the to= is an address you've tried to send mail to. Or try to send another mail and just grab the last two lines in the mail log. They ought to be related to that mail. //Anders

Well. I did the last tip. I have opened the tail -f /var/log/mail. Nothing got logged, and the not sent mail stay in the Outbox in Kmail. Seems that nothing happens when sending the mail(s).

Is sendmail running at all? (rcsendmail status) if you do "telnet localhost 25" does the sendmail server respond? Is your kmail set up to use localhost for smtp? //Anders

Hi Anders. I have forgotten to set the Host to localhost :-( Now it works. Thanks so much for your help
