I am trying to find a webcam I can use with suse. Hardware databases don't say much at all. So can some one report they are using a webcam with suse (9.2) and what installation entailed. Chris

USB-based webcams don't seem to be well supported under Linux. However, you could use a TV card connected to a CCD camera (via the video input) and then write a simple script to periodically generate image snapshots using the v4lctl command. I have experimented with this using a Hauppauge WinTV PCI card and a small color CCD camera from a local surplus store, and it works quite well under SuSE 9.1. -Ti -- Ti Kan http://www.amb.org/ti Vorsprung durch Technik

The Logitech Pro 3000 and 4000 work fine, though you may have to do something with pwc (http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/ , http://www.seismo.ethz.ch/linux/webcam.html ). I've also got an older Philips 740 running just fine in 9.2 , I use Camstream as the app and/or GnomeMeeting, and they both also work just fine.

I am using a Logitech Quickcam pro (new model: productID 0x920) and it works with the spcaview driver (don't have the link right now, but google should help). As viewer I use the webcam tool out of the v4l-tools. -- Thomas Wedehase Nuernberg, Germany www.thomaswedehase.com PGP-KEY: 0x3337F9AC "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Thanks for the replies. The situation seems to be as I expected- not good. I think I will go for the lOitec Quick cam pro as I see stuff for that when I google so I'm presuming it can be got going without too much fuss. Now I have to find one. Chris
