[SLE] wvdial dial-on-demand and caching DNS
Hello, all. I am working on getting my gateway system switched over from freesco, to SuSE. I had initially planned on using ppp and diald, with an eye towards later using some of the filtering and rules capability of diald. In the short run, I opted to go w/ wvdial and the wvdial.dod script from SuSE's SDB. I got the system running, and forwarding my connection from my desktop box to the internet, after a little work w/ the FW-* settings in yast. I opted to setup a caching DNS server on this box, to speed up things since I have a slow analog modem dialup connection. I have been looking thru both the DNS-HOWTO, and the DNS section of 'SuSE Unleashed' from SAM's. I seem to have run into a snag, where nslookup seems to indicate that it is just using my ISP's DNS, and not mine. I scanned the list archives and found a message where someone had problems and thought that wvdial/wvdial.dod was activating some option in /etc/ppp/ip-up to get it's DNS servers from the ISP, write these to a temporary /etc/resolv.conf, and effectively bypass the system /etc/resolve.conf. I was subsequently unable to find any answers/solutions posted. Has anyone had any experience w/ this? If so, I would guess the 'solution' might be to run a 'conventional' ppp setup, and diald, sooner rather than later.
