[opensuse] Certain videos do not play on Tumbleweed from July 6th, 2019
Hello, some time ago I was trying SuSE Tumbleweed version from July 6th,2019 on an older laptop. It does have the same problem as an older OpenSuSE 13.1 on a desktop PC which I want to update. E.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyC3CWDlEzY plays without problems on Opera and Firefox 68.0.1 ESR whereas https://tvthek.orf.at/profile/Wetter-Panorama/7268748/Wetter-Panorama-und-Pr... does not play on Opera 62.0.3331.66 or Firefox 68.0.1 ESR. Since this is a problem on this newer Tumbleweed version _and_ on the older SuSE 13.1 I am somehow stuck now and I want to clarify this before updating the older 13.1 machine. What am I missing? Thanks in advance ME -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Did you do the packman switch?
No, I did not do this. Neither on 13.1 nor on Tumbleweed. So the packman repositories are now somehow mandatory in SuSE (Tumbleweed) if you need certain media stuff? I somehow remember that they were not needed in 13.1 and the various media played normal until one of the last updates in 13.1 . Or was that the html5 stuff - do not quite remember when this was.

No, full multimedia support has always required codecs and applications from packman. I don't remember when I found that out, could be SuSE 6.2. Year 2000. Either packman or recompiling the app locally. I did that with Xine more than once. Xine sources had (have?) a default build time switch that disables support for several codecs, making it fully legal everywhere. So the trick was to build it again enabling that section of the code. There was a help file from SuSE that explained the problem, but refrained to say exactly what switch to apply. They were very cautious with the language. The "crippled" version of Xine could still play some videos, if they had been made with codecs that were not patented or with contended legality in every country where SuSE had presence, notably the USA. Similar issue with any other multimedia program. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

The first plays perfectly, the second has no sound but video is OK. Using Opensuse Tumbleweed from April 2019, updated in June. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

fwiw: "Tumbleweed from April 2019" is irrelevant and "updated in June" is also. there were many updates in June, and since, so your statement really tell very little about your system, except that it is not up-to-date. why run Tumbleweed if your are not going to update with some frequency? -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

some video I have, made with old cameras (more than 10 years ago) have similar problem: some reader gives sound but no image and others no sound but images. I had to make a two pass script to have them html5 compatible jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If it is a html5 problem this might be the case on the old SuSE 13.1 machine. How safe are these unofficial packman repositories? Am I able to use only parts of packman and stay on SuSE tumbleweed for the main system? Did anybody try this one: https://fluendo.com/en/products/multimedia/oneplay-codec-pack/ ? Some say an additional software is needed which is something I do not want to do either: https://www.mrfdev.com/youtube-flash-player Did the videos play on former times just because of flash plugins in the browser which were then removed because of security issues? In previous times there was also this non-oss DVD. Is this still a possibility on SuSE Tumbleweed? Many questions sorry, since I did not do a SuSE udpate quite for some time. They are safe, most of them are made by the same people that made the same "crippled" package on openSUSE.
Did anybody try this one: https://fluendo.com/en/products/multimedia/oneplay-codec-pack/ ?
I don't know any. Probably machines on business use.

No. If you do need flash, get it from packman. And this one is dangerous because it is barely maintained and has known problems. Eventually it will disappear.
Did the videos play on former times just because of flash plugins in the browser which were then removed because of security issues?
Only if they were made with flash, and you had flash installed.
In previous times there was also this non-oss DVD. Is this still a possibility on SuSE Tumbleweed?
Certainly, it is non-oss repository. But it will not contain patented codecs, same issue as oss repo. It is hosted/provided by SUSE servers.
Many questions sorry, since I did not do a SuSE udpate quite for some time.
We can see :-D -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

as safe as official ones :-)

for sure, packman only deal with legally problematic stuff
I completely stopped to use flash, after being compromised by it's plugin...

only .flv ones, but ffmpeg can convert them to mp4 (for example)

there is the same repo

we see that, welcome again :-) jdd

yes. the linux flash plugin is no more maintained since several years. It allowed somebody to know my password on Facebook as soon as I changed it. Removing the plugin removed the hole. jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
