Weird problem with webcam
I have a weird problem with my Logitech C270 webcam. It has worked well for years, including a lot of video chats recently. However, a couple of weeks ago, the microphone stopped working. It doesn't even appear in Pulse Audio. I then tried it in my ThinkPad, where it again failed. On the other hand the microphone in my Logitech headset works fine with both computers. This led me to believe the webcam microphone had failed. I then bought another C270 and the same thing happens! I then tried booting the Thinkpad into Windows 10, where the webcam microphone now works. Any idea why it would fail in openSUSE 15.2, but work in Windows 10 on the same computer? tnx jk

Maybe some upgrade broke support for it. You could, for instance, download and "install" the XFCE Rescue image into an USB stick, boot it, and check the camera. <http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.2/live/openSUSE-Leap-15.2-Rescue-CD-x86_64-Media.iso> If it works there, report in Bugzilla. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. In pavucontrol ? Does it appear in the output from 'arecord -L' ? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.3°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland.

I presume ^^^^^^^^^^^ is your A/V receiver? Hmmm, that certainly looks odd, no microphone to be seen. Next I would probably look at dmesg output when you unplug/plug the usb cable. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (11.9°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland.

I have the same webcam and had the same problem. To restore the webcam in the input microphones, add: default-sample-rate = 48000 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf then restart. -- Michele Bologna <michele.bologna@suse.com> SUSE Software Solutions Italy srl - https://www.suse.com

That appears to have fixed it. tnx. Now, what to do with an extra camera? :-(

I see more and more of these petty problems with 15.2 and it makes me reluctant to upgrade. -- “Reality is so complex, we must move away from dogma, whether it’s conspiracy theories or free-market,” -- James Glattfelder. http://jth.ch/jbg

It was apparently some update that caused the problem. It worked fine, until a couple of weeks ago. It's also curious that the headset microphone would work, but not the webcam. On my ThinkPad, the built in microphone also worked.

AKA it's inherently unstable and inconsistent across platforms. -- “Reality is so complex, we must move away from dogma, whether it’s conspiracy theories or free-market,” -- James Glattfelder. http://jth.ch/jbg
