Hello I tried to do what you said Patrick. I had to make by hand XF86config because sax2 crashes when it strats the X sever. That's ok to use my station but with some limitations : I can't go to the text consoles (Alt + F1 -> F6) otherwise crash + bip bip I can't shutdown in the normal way my PC because when X is going down : crash + bip bip !! I don't know which bios or X settings are responsible for this behavior but my conclusion is at this time : MSI mother board + ATI Radeon + XFree = big problems If someone has an idear on the cause of this issue. hello all
I've got a problem with my system : every time the X server goes down my PC freezes and emits numerous beeps ! So I start my station in level 3 (no X), startx => no pb even 3D hardware accel is present but as soon as I leave the xsession => crash !! I suspect it comes from Advanced Configuartion & Power Interface (ACPI) functions on the mother board but not sure. (some settings prevent the PC to boot ounder linux, after lilo but not under win98) I've played with many bios features and nothing to prevent this behavior.
If any one as this configuration :MSI KT266 Pro2 + ATI Radeon7500 can he tell me if is system works with standard default bios settings ?
Anyone heard about such a problem before ?
Thanks in advance for directions to look forward
Yann
=========================== Yann, I had this same problem with a customer's machine using a MSI mobo and Radeon 8500 card. I installed a fresh 7.3 with graphics, booting into KDE. When I shutdown, it just froze the machine requiring a reset. Even when trying to go from a level 3 into X, it failed. I tried updating the XF86 4.2 without success either. After some investigation, I decided it was the framebuffer settings done by 7.3 for the newer Radeon card.
Instead of trying to run down the whole fb thing, I just reinstalled SuSE, but this time to the text or level 3 environment. From here I updated my XF86 files to 4.2, plus my Sax2 files off a cd backup. I then ran sax2 -m 0=radeon from the console, setting up all the graphics stuff and exited. I issued a "rcxdm start" command which started X and kdm for me, logged in and ran KDE just great! After that I used Yast2 to change my default settings to kde & kdm. No problems existed after doing that. Boot up and log out look and work fantastic!
