[SLE] Is anybody using dual monitors?
I think XFree 4.0 will include dual monitor support. Assuming it doesn't cost too much to fix my old monitor I wouldn't mind going dual at least part time. Is there a low cost PCI board that works reasonalbley well? [say 1024X768 at 70HZ] Anything to watch out for? Is it possible to run dual monitor when I need the extra space and single the rest of the time? I'm a Unix admin for Long's Drugs shepherding HPUX & AIX systems and we use Linux as Unix desktop workstations. At work we have been running Redhat, but I have been experimenting with different releases (i.e. Debian & Caldera). I just tried the new 6.3 SuSE release and I am delighted with the package, so I plan to pitch my tent here for a while. I do have a (stupid) question: Apparently, I am not installing LILO properly, because when I reboot, the system fails to find LILO and the boot fails. I can use the 2nd distribution CD and boot the installation that way (by identifying the / partition). Obviously, there is a way to configure LILO to boot - what did I do wrong, or more importantly, what do I need to do to correct this situation? One other pressing concern - how does one pronounce SuSE? The letter reads as follows, Dear SuSE Linux User, Shortly before our release date, we have unfortunately found a bug in YaST2. If you want to install LILO (the LInux LOader) with YaST2 in the /boot partition, a fault occurs. Installing LILO to the MBR or to the floppy disk functions without any trouble, however. Remedy: In these caes, you should use YaST1, by booting from the second CD. How exactly does it fail, does it get the "OS not installed" error message from the BIOS or does it get only part of the LILO boot loader like "LI" then just starts beeping. If the second case is true, check the SuSE 6.3 manual, it will tell you what just part of the word LILO at boot means. If you put the second CD and boot of that, there is an option to "rescuse system" which is basically a single user mode that mounts a ram disk. Get your system up and running with that, mount your drives and make sure the kernel is in the /boot directory (even though your root drive will be mounted somewhere else). Run the lilo command on that drive, and also make sure you have an /etc/lilo.conf file.
I can use the 2nd distribution CD and boot the installation that way (by identifying the / partition). Obviously, there is a way to configure LILO to boot - what did I do wrong,
Not sure, was there a place in YaST during install that asked if you wanted to install lilo?
or more importantly, what do I need to do to correct this situation?
Try booting off second CD, go into "recuse mode" and mount your / drive, run lilo on that drive.
One other pressing concern - how does one pronounce SuSE?
I think it is pronounced like the women's name Suse.Like Sussie but without the "e" on the end.

hate to even get involved in this but ;-) The company is German so I'll assume that the trailing E is pronounced (as it usually is when speaking German), and probably sounds more like: Phonetically: Zooz-a Although I have a German email address I am American (if that matters to anyone)..... that should blow my credibility amongst the Euro community Flame me, I have thick skin :-) Tim -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Fromthe FAQ at: http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/SuSE-Linux-E-FAQ-2.html
"How do you pronounce SuSE?
It should be pronounced like "Soose". The "U" sounds like the "oo" in
"moose", the last "e" is spoken like the "a" in "at". But in general it is
not very important to pronounce it correctly, as long as it is clear what
you are talking about. "
So I am still think, it should sound like the women's name Suse? Like
"sue-ah"?

Okay, but what does S.u.S.E. means, literally?

Okay, but what does S.u.S.E. means, literally?
It is German: "Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH" which stands for "Company for Software- and System-Development" In there FAQ is says: "What does SuSE stand for? "Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH", which can be roughly translated as "Company for Software- and System-Development" On October 21st, 1998, the official name has been changed from "S.u.S.E." to "SuSE" (without the dots), mainly because people were often misspelling the old name and it was a very uncomfortable to type. However, you may still use the old name, even though it is expected to vanish." But that /still doesn't make sense to me, the German name would be like this: GSuSm and the English should look like this: CfSaSd or CSSD I guess the got SuSE from "Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH" in some differant way than what I ussually think out. Maybe it is a German way of doing it where I just can't firgure it out. How they "extracted" SuSE from there Full German name. Jack

The company SuSE is called a "GmbH", a "Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung", the german term for "private limited company". Including the name it would be "Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH" This is were SuSE comes from: S - Software u - und S - System E - Entwicklung (Development) I hope this clears this issue up.
