[opensuse] Factory repo rpm problem
Hi, I just tried to update OpenOffice from factory and (fortunately before downloading the real big files) every file, so far, fails with the rpm error :- "unpacking of archive failed: cpio: Bad magic" Anybody else know how many corrupt files are in the factory repo or if anybody is aware of this problem yet. Thanks Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The issue is that the payload in RPM is no longer bzip2 compressed. So the rpm executable you have on your workstation is not able to deal with the new .rpm files. Updating rpm package should help you get over it. Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I had version 4.4.2-144 installed prior to updating to 4.4.2-182 thats not a serious volume change. They should ensure a dependency change in the affected rpms anyway. Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know what Factory is and I am trying to determine whether this is a bug or not. Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Maybe you don't, because you are asking here >:-) Why don't you ask in the factory list? I never realized there was a separate list I've just subscribed. I still think the rpms should have their dependencies updated to the correct rpm version when built. Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think they are done correctly, but the server are being continuously updated with new packages and you may catch a non correct structure now and then. They have an schedule, I "think" it is best to upgrade during the weekend. I think, maybe someone knows better. And read the warnings in the factory list before doing the update. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I just downgraded to rpm-4.4.2-144 and reproduced the problem, I did notice zypper wanted to remove rpm this time though. I then reinstalled rpm-4.4.2-182 and no problem. I think the problem is the rpms themselves only contain the version 4.4.2 and not the build numbers. Understandable! But why here? There is a dedicated list for factory: opensuse-factory@opensuse.org Btw, it was really fun to read some questions about k(tm)ernel on the opensuse kde mailing list.... I wont forget the reponse: "You're aware that the kernel is - even though it starts with a K - not a KDE application?" ;-P Checking this page might prove usefully before starting a new thread: http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate/Mailinglists Cheers Pete - -- All the best, Peter J. Thanks, I've subscribed, maybe I can get yast up and running again, all my hardware related yast programs have been broken for a couple of weeks. Still it's a fantastic learning curve doing without, its so much easier to edit resolv.conf to change nameservers than using yast. Dave Ok this must be due to a new rpmbuild in use or something. I installed mozilla-nspr & mozilla-nss from the mozilla factory beta repo successfully prior to updating rpm then I still had a problem and emailed my original post. Then I updated rpm and retried a zypper install of OpenOffice_org. The identical Xalan-c file that had the cpio error installed successfully. iianm, I believe that the newer rpm utilizes a different compression scheme. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
