Hello All, I have searched Suse's hardware database trying to find a server-class dual xeon or dual Athlon MP motherboard that I can buy and load SuSE 8.2 professional on with no results. Their hardware database is too far behind current technology. I want to put together an "EXTREMELY" fast system with a minimum of 2 - 2.6GHz + Xeons or Athlons and a U320 or U160 SCSI hard drive(s) and 2 Gig or more of memory. I need to know if there is a dual cpu motherboard that SuSE 8.2 Professional will run on of this calibre. Can anyone tell me if any of the motherboards in this list will work? For Xeon CPUs... Asus PC-DL Deluxe Asus PR-DLSW Intel SE7505VB2 Supermicro X5DA8 Supermicro P4DP6-Q Supermicro P4DC6+ Supermicro X5DAL-G For AMD CPUs... GigaByte GA-7DPXDW-P MSI K7D Master MPX Any other recommendations would be appreciated. I want a motherboard that Suse 8.2 will recognize ALL onboard components like USB, LAN, SCSI, IDE, AUDIO, ect., and I will most likely use an external AGP card, hence it needs an AGP 4x or 8x slot. I prefer integrated SCSI but that's not manditory. Thanks for any help, Jack A.

I can say anything about those, but my Tyan S2460 with a pair of 1600+ MP processors works quite nicely. 1 gig of ram, and all SCSI components is nice too. I think the 2469 or even the 2462 will hold up to what you want. I have 3 dual Intel-based Tyan motherboards here at work and they have not proven to be very good choice to base a system on. Their performance is poor compared to like boards from Intel and Supermicro using the same cpu base. I have since steered away from Tyan components and there has been one failure. There has not been good relations with Tyan's tech support either. This is a personal experiance. Perhaps yours is better. Thanks for the feedback. You may want to check out www.ironsystems.com as they sell servers and will preload SuSE on them. I recently purchased 4 1-U rackmount servers and they were quite fast even for celeron systems. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998

I started using Tyan motherboards a while back. Well, about the time when the S1564 was hot. Bought a single CPU model, and it ran and ran and ran.... Actually it still runs quite nicely, although it isn't fast by todays standards. Since then I've had two more tyan systems, The one I mentioned, and a S1564d that I used for a firewall/proxy/router for a long time. Perhaps they aren't the fastest, but I've not had "mechanical" problems with any of them. I have looked at components at Monarch Computer but they are a little pricey. I can (and prefer) to build my systems myself as I can better control the component quality and cost that goes into it, as well as insure that I get the system configured to my requirements. Monarch has several motherboards and components listed but nothing to tell you what components will work with your chosen OS. The latter is the information I'm trying to find. I use their component listings to do further research on compatibility with my chosen OS. Thank you for the feedback. As far as I know Gigabyte provides linux drivers for their dual Athlon boards, although, as the chipset is a modified AMD 76x, which is well supported, my guess would be that it is natively supported anyway. I was thinking of getting one of these when they came out and got some good responses to my questions. You could check www.gigabyte.com.tw and go to the server menu. Somewhere in there is the server/workstation board menu and you can check them out. I don't know the other boards, especially not the Intels. But since there's only the AMD chipset for dual Athlons, which hasn't changed too much since it first came out, your chances are pretty good. Hans

Hello All,

We use an Intel SHG2 Reliance Computer Corp/ServerWorks mobo (onboard vga) 400MHz FSB; 160MBs SCSI controller plus usual other I/O's (USB2, etc) Twin 2.0GHz P4 Xeons cpu's (512kb L2) RAM is 2GB Backup is Seagate Scorpion DDS-4 tape drive All seen and properly recognised by SuSE 8.2 AFAIK this is ± 1.5yr old technology
For Xeon CPUs... Asus PC-DL Deluxe Asus PR-DLSW Intel SE7505VB2 Supermicro X5DA8 Supermicro P4DP6-Q Supermicro P4DC6+ Supermicro X5DAL-G
For AMD CPUs... GigaByte GA-7DPXDW-P MSI K7D Master MPX
Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi, I have setup my new system with the following: MB: Tyan Tiger 2668 CPU: 2 x XEON 2,8 Ghz MEM: 4 x 512Mb Video: ATI 9200 VIVO AGP 8x 128Mb HD: 2 x 36 Gb Ultra 160 OS: SuSE 8.2 It runs smooth. All components are running perfect. Few pb with ATI driver, but with the last realease 3.2.5, it works very well. Bye Yvon Jack Alderson wrote:
