[opensuse] 'Separating' Dual head cards?
Hi, I am investigating obtaining another machine and monitor for my amateur radio use, but I do not want to have an additional kb and mouse so I figured I could cable it into my KVM switch. What I would like to find out is if a dual output on the nVidia GeForce 8800GT can be split i.e. with the same image going to two different monitors. Has anyone accomplished this 'splitting' the signal on opensuse 10.2 or is it non possible? Tnx and sorry for the 'OT'. Since you're running Linux, you don't even need a KVM. You can configure your computers to use XDMCP, so that any computer can be an X terminal for any other computer. I do this all the time at home. This way you can easily switch between displays, without any extra hardware. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
with nVidia, you can twinview (both displays as one) or clone view (both displays showing same content). On Tuesday 11 December 2007 10:27:52 am James Knott wrote:

You can also use tightvnc, Xvnc to send the keyboard, mouse, and screen from one computer to another. That is what I use for my 13+ computers and one keyboard, mouse, dual-head setup. There is also ssh for console apps, and ssh -X for X apps (but is sometimes slower than vnc, depending on the task). I do not understand fully your request. The KVM will share kbd and mouse between 2 computers. But what are you trying to do with the 2 monitors, connected to one of them on the dual head? If you just need to display one and the same thing from one machine on both monitors - then put the nvidia driver in a clone mode, and you are done. Btw, if you have 2 computers, each with it's own monitor, you can try Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) to share the kbd and mouse over the network. That's what I use to control my mythtv machine if I need kbd and mouse for it. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Tnx for all the replies, especially James and Brad. Cloning is the word I was looking for but it certainly seems that XDMCP looks like what I need as then I do not even have to have a dual headed display card, just a network connection to the machine? I need to do some more investigation into exactly what I need here. Does anyone know of a home page site for XDMCP? XDMCP (X Display Manager Control Protocol) is part of X. XDMCP allows a display manager (xdm, kdm, etc.) to manage a remote X display (server), usually over an ethernet connection. See "man xdm" or http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/XDMCP-HOWTO.html for starters. Google helps, too.
