Hello, I'm planning on replacing my old AMD K7 (slotA) with a new motherboard/cpu. I've really liked AMD and their pricing and I've been using AMD cpu's since the K6-2 300MHz and on... Now I feel that Intel has dropped their prices and are being really competetive with their P4 processor. What I'd like is to have some comments and thoughts on what to choose?! Rambus is to expensive and not that good so I was thinking of either a P4 with DDR-memory (SiS 645, Intel 845E or 845G) or a Athlon XP with DDR333-memory. Does anyone know of the integrated graphics of the Intel 845G chipset is supported under X? As I have understood it the 845E chipset lacks the support for DDR333 memory that makes the 845G a really good chipset competitive with rambus systems. My impression of chipsets are that VIA-based systems have higher latencies and have had more bugs during the years... Comments? Thoughts? Recommendations? btw, does anyone know of any SMP-motherboards for the P4? I've only found really expensive server-boards for P4 Xeons... I'm using intel 845G. The 845G integrated graphics is not supported right now. If you go to intel web site and do some search, intel said it will be supported in future XFree... I believe it's XFree 4.3.0 which /should/ come any time soon. And current SuSE 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18 doesn't support the ICH4 in i845E & i845G. ICH4 is the chipset that bring USB 2.0 in intel mobo. As the result of this, I can't have IDE DMA turn-on until 2.4.19 arrive. the 2.4.19 kernel currently in RC3-ac3, which mean it will be available as final 2.4.19 very soon.

no. 845E and 845G DOES NOT support DDR 333 OFFICIALLY. If you buy intel motherboad with this chipset you were limited to DDR 266. But other brand do support DDR 333 with 845E and 845G. Only 845GL that doesn't support DDR333 at all, because intel want 845GL to be celeron sollution. The main different between 845E and 845G is the maximum throughput between PCI/chipset. So, for normal user 845E & 845G will have the same performance, but for user that use the PCI bandwith very big, 845E is faster. So, if you use all 100MB on your NIC (or you have Gigabit NIC) and your hard drive never stop, etc.... you better stick with 845E.

I think VIA chipset is always have big bug that hit the performance. and current VIA P4 chipset is not good because VIA doesn't have intel license.

SiS P4 chipset is good and FAST. I think SiS trying very hard to be a great company with P4 chipset. and their chipset is faster than intel solution, and it's CHEAPER.
