[opensuse] Monitor gets turned off when install system
Hi, all: I just started using OpenSUSE last night. When I boot from CD and choose 'install' monitor gets turned off. The resolution auto-chosen is 1280x1024. I fixed this problem by choosing Text Mode. Anyone has same issue and how to solve it in future installation? Another small question, I have Pentium 4 and gets all i586 packages installed. So which CPUs use i686 packages? Thanks -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

normally it should read the data fronm DDC-2B if I'm not wrong... in your case it might be the screen giving wrong info, the cable being broken (had once such a case) or the graphic card behavnig strange. Did you also try to enforce a lower resolution, like 1024x768?

There are only very few i686 packages available for openSUSE, mainly glibc. The difference in optimization is rather low and not worth any hassle. Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

We've had this problem in the past with ATI boards using funny timings for the 1280x1024 mode. If it's an ATI card and other modes work for you, send the output of 'hwinfo --bios' and I'll see if I can add another workaround for your card. This may be the monitor protecting itself. If refresh rates of the video card are wrong for your monitor, some monitors just shut down to prevent damage. You will probably have to get the specifics of your monitor, and limit yourself to 1024x768 till you get this sorted out.

Thanks, guys. 1280x1024 75Hz works fine after installation, in daily use. Monitor only switch off during installation. I will run 'hwinfo -bios" tonight. Regards 2008/5/8 John Andersen <jsamyth@gmail.com>:
