As you're using X anyway, and being newbie, you might like this solution better than grinding the "legacy" editors: Use kate (Launcher/System/Editor). Or, if you need to do the editing as root (for config files), you can Alt+F2 "kdesu kate". This will give you a kate running as root while you are logged on as yourself. Also, try krusader (it's included) instead of midnight commander.
