Looks like you didn't install some of the development related packages. Run yast and go to Software Installation, then browse through all the compilers, header files, libraries, etc., and install all that you need. -Ti

This is just an aside, but I've found the "Dictionary" program included in SuSE 9.1 (at least) very handy. It's billed (in its "About..." dialog) as "A client for the MIT dictionary server." And I say that it's handy even though I have a physical dictionary right next to the monitor on my desk.

That's debatable, and probably dependent on the context in which you're using it.

I said easier, my opinion, but best is also relative.

I'm by no means command-line-phobic (or even possessed of an overall bias one way or the other), but in this case, I like the GUI.

I use the gui, but prefer cl and use it for most things.

It's somewhat like the discussion of how best to extract user names from an "ls" listing. "Best" is very context- and purpose-dependent.

The "About..." dialog mentions the "MIT dictionary server" but the preferences for the application allow you to configure the host to which dictionary lookups are submitted as well as to select from available databases on that server. I think you have to "parenthesize" the phrase "MIT dictionary server" as "MIT (dictionary server)", not "(MIT dictionary) server". I couldn't find much on Google about "the MIT dictionary server." My guess is that it's a historical reference perhaps more relevant to the author of the program than most people now using it. Perhaps the (or one of the) first implementations of the dictionary protocol were made at MIT? By the way, there's a pretty sizeable chunk of English that has remained unchanged between 1913 and now!

Very possibly he did not read the information on the personal box that it doesn't contain development programs and libraries, or did not understood it. So it's the download edition, therefore no manual/box to read. It also seems that he's working for a non profit organisation (gleaned from another thread) so maybe they don't have much money for OS lisensing.

Still Ben, I think a single copy of Pro would be a good idea just for the manuals that come in the box, plus there'd be at least one machine with GCC on it.

Having a SuSE 9.1 Personal version and complaining about compilation problems is not in Ben's favor. ;) But OTOH, with a good internet connection, one can turn a Personal into a Professional version. Or almost, if the FTP version lacks a few packages (usually the commercial packages are not in the FTP version).

That, and jumping threads, makes more dificult for us to try to help him. I have LIBSTD++-DEV installed, but ive never been able to ./configure any software and had to allways try and find a RPM of everything!!!

There is no such thing as "LIBSTD++-DEV" in SuSE. Where did you get it from? The equivalent package in SuSE 9.1 must be "libstdc++-devel-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm" Check with "rpm -q libstdc++ libstdc++-devel". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
