Lot's of changes where made along the thread that were necessary and this from Jim Bruer for my specific printer made it happen. Thank you all, Linux rules !!!!!!! Good we know it is connected to /dev/lp0
and that the port is not functioning properly for some reason.
What printer are you using?
Epson Stylus Color 740. I'm using the model 500 config suggested by SuSE Support site. Works perfectly in win98. Most apps act just like they are printing normally and terminate the print stuff as if it printed normally. Apps that use lpq set the file in lp and lpq says "lp is ready and printing" for a reasonable time and then the file is dropped and "lp ready" returns. No idea of implications of this.
Have you checked to see if you can print from MS-Dos or Windows on this machine to the printer. I suppect that you have a hardware problem. Have you checked the cable?
What is this "cat" by the way?
man cat
NAME cat - concatenate files and print on
now the
standard output
SYNOPSIS cat [OPTION] [FILE]...
DESCRIPTION Concatenate FILE(s), or standard input, to standard output.
Or put simply it prints a file to the screen unless redirected. Similiar to the 'type' command under DOS.

EPSON 740 CONFIG--should work with minor variation in Suse 6.3 I posted the following on dejanews several months ago. Once you get the hardware kinks worked out it should help you get the most out of your Epson 740.
For SuSE 6.1 users, the following worked for my Epson 740
LOOK AT the SuSE Support Database: http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e/index.html "Printing with kernel 2.2.xx" it says: SuSE Linux: Versions since 6.0 Kernel: Versions since 2.2 Symptom: After updating to the 2.2.xx kernel printing no longer works... Cause: With the 2.2.x kernel the "parport" subsystem appeared and the numbering of the interfaces has changed. Solution: 1. Please use the kernel that was provided with your SuSE system, as well as the modules that are included in the "kernmod" package; Unfortunately kernels that have been recompiled can not be covered by our installation support! 2. In /etc/printcap change the device /dev/lp1 to /dev/lp0. 3 . . .etc.
