[SuSE Linux] Colour depth question
I have been running X at a colour depth of 24bpp with only one problem. All the icons in Netscape were rendering as very low resolution monochrome images. I never made the association to the colour depth until last night when I installed WordPerfect 8. All the images in the GUI install wizard rendered as a weird looking cross-hatch pattern. This didn't hinder the install in any way and I figured it may just be a glitch in the install. However when I started xwp, the splash screen, the image in the top box and all the toolbar icons were the same. At this point I started thinking of colour depth and switched to 8bpp. Now wp and ns rendered their images perfectly but overall resolution was too poor. Switched to 16bpp and everything now looks great. Why would these images render correctly at 16bpp but not at 24bpp? I have always use TrueColor (24bpp) on Windows and NT and have never seen images render incorrectly. What is different about these images that would cause this? It depends on the Xserver. This happen with SVGA server. I had the same problem and I solved it using the S3V server (i have an S3Virge). I posted this messages sometime ago. Try to read the README.S3V or README.SVGA on /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc. Maurizio --------------------------------------- Associazione Culturale Passepartout Piazza G. Martin to Everybody: Hello! I had problems installing SO5 for some time and happily discovered that installing the SVGA server resolved the "freeze" problem, while on the other part, it deprived my nice Netscape icons from their colour when under 24bpp resolution. My intentions are, however, to use the XF86_S3V server, which is adapted to the "S3 Virge DX/GX rev.1" card I have... with the 24bpp resolution. Unfortunately, SO5 is still freezing, even now that it is installed. 1st quest: I heard, not a long time ago, someone speaking about a patch resolving the problem... can I know where to find it, please? 2nd quest: after having freezed with X-window, I was forced to switch off and on again my computer. That procedure induced an everlasting disk-check. The message was something like: partition not cleanly unmounted. Check forced. hda2 (2,6on contiguous) etc... Well. What does that mean? If I get freezed one more time or two I will have "100% contiguous" : ) Hope it won't happen : ( Thank you for the answers. There is a patch on the staroffice site for S3 server so that the staroffice won't freese (the advice came from this list). The directions for the patch were very confusing though, I tried it in several ways and the staroffice would still freese. There were some silly changes with env. variables involved with customising S3 server for staroffice. I switched to the SVGA server and everything worked fine. If the patch won't work for you then maybe you should keep the SVGA server. About partitions check - this is somewhat similar to what happens when you recet windows95 and during the boot it asks you to check hard disk. You can find an explanation to this in the book that came with suse. This is how it should be with linux if you reset your PC without shutting down the OS first. About color depth on SVGA I cannot really say anything. Serguei Martin Miszczyk wrote:
