[opensuse] software package version numbers vs build dates?
Friends, For a very long time, I've noticed that YaST software management (and hence I presume zypper?) will determine the most current version of a package based upon its version number rather than its build date. Consequently, when packages are displayed, if there is a higher version number available YaST will show it in blue, whereas if there is an alternate package with a newer date but lower version number, it will be displayed in red. And, if the user does an "all in this list, update if newer version available", YaST will select those packages with higher version numbers (the blue) but not those with lower version numbers/newer build dates (the red). It appears that those packages with lower version numbers but newer build dates, are (at least sometimes) definitely the newer versions - the build date on the older version number can be as much as several months newer. While this is occurs most often in Packman packages, it also is occasionally the case with packages in SuSE repositories like 11.3 KDE 4.5. Can anyone explain why this is so? In particular, should the user only take the higher version number or, when a newer package is available although with an older version number, should that be given preference? (And I guess it follows, is YaST therefore behaving as it should?)
