[SuSE Linux] fetchmail password failure
Hi, I've seen the light, and have seen what a nice package fetchmail is, and I've tried to set it up as suggested in the Offline-Mail howto. The problem I'm having is that my password is rejected. I tried pmail also, and my isp mail server rejects the password. When I send the user, it accepts, and requests the password, but the password is rejected. But it works fine with Netscape. What is the clue? Does Netscape use some special way of sending the password? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
no...no special communication from netscape...you probably have the .fetchmailrc formated wrong. Post it to the list and we'll fix it. We promise not to send spam from your mailbox :-p

Yes. Fetchmail is great. I've used it for years.

Well I've looked into it a bit, and it seems that it is an APOP password challenge. It is in the fetchmail docs. I need to figure out how to get to popauth on the server and change the APOP password. Then I'm afraid I'll mess up Netscape's APOP setup. Can I have 2 APOP passwords? I skimmed the man page too. It "seems" like this may be a apop problem. What did you see that convinced you it was apop problem? Did you try a username like zentara instead of zentara@...?, like someone else suggested? I tried putting a bad username in my .fetchmailrc and it reacted exactly like yours did. So it may be a bad username... Don't discount your isp without at least asking for help. You never know who's on the other end. Maybe someone good. My current isp providing dialup runs Redhat and seems very professional the few times I have approached them. My shell only account also runs Redhat and is good too. I dropped Mindspring (a US National) because of poor service from Houston.

Sorry, no experience with apop. Try searching dejanews. Good luck. There is a description of this in the fetchmail faq. Notice the mailserver's initial header, the address in brackets, with a number to the left. fetchmail: POP3< +OK <9394.913855321@frog.netperson.net> ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ fetchmail: POP3> USER zentara@netfrog.net fetchmail: POP3< +OK fetchmail: POP3> PASS * fetchmail: POP3< -ERR authorization failed fetchmail: authorization failed fetchmail: selecting or re-polling default folder fetchmail: POP3> STAT fetchmail: socket error while fetching from mail.netperson.net fetchmail: normal termination, status 2 That is the APOP encryption number, which changes everytime.

Just one hint: the german service gmx changed the way you fetch mail. Instead of your username, you'd either use the full e-mail address, or a customer number. (6digits), which won't work, unless you put it in quotes. If there is something strange, I'd try that first. poll mail.linux-shell.net protocol pop3 username "stevep" password "xxxxxx" just like that. Hello everybody, Let me try to explain my predicament as well as possible...... Firstly I have an IBM APTIVA L31. I know that there is quite a lot of proprietary hardware/software on it, and that installing/running LINUX will not be flawless on it, I want to point out that I will be using the computer as a gateway, and a server for other things......... The computer has a BOOTABLE CD-ROM option on the BIOS, so I just popped in the SuSE CD-1 into the drive and cold booted the system. A very funny thing happened. When it tried to boot the CDROM, all I saw was...... LI 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 (and on, and on, and on) And while it was doing that it was accessing my drive A at about 2-3 times per second. So I figured use the boot disk. Presto, it worked properly. However I am still not satisfied. Because I bought a book which had REDHAT 5.1 on it, and the CDROM booted flawlessly and LILO came up without a hitch!! So what is the problem with the SuSE CD?! I hope someone can help me with that question. Now time for a request........ Anyways, I installed LINUX and was not happy with the modules I installed, plus I tinkered around with it to such an extent that it got buggered up. I tried to do a graphical login, and everything works properly till the login prompt comes and the screen just flickers......meaning, it appears, and disappears, appears and disappears, roughly about once a second. Oh and when I press a key on the keyboard, it takes about 10 seconds of continuous pressing before a character appears on the screen. One thing I did notice in the boot log was a mention about KDM. Perhaps that can help you gurus solve my problem. Now the request I have is that I managed to wipe out my install disk that came with SuSE 5.3. Can someone please........ 1. Attach an image with the RAWRITE util, so that I can restore the floppy. 2. Direct me to the SuSE FTP site's proper URL that has that image file. Any and all help would be HUGELY appreciated! Thanks in advance. ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^ Zulfiqar Naushad zulfiqar@shaw.wave.ca ICQ UIN: 6001618 <A HREF="http://members.tor.shaw.wave.ca/~zulfiqar/"><A HREF="http://members.tor.shaw.wave.ca/~zulfiqar/</A">http://members.tor.shaw.wave.ca/~zulfiqar/</A</A>> ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^ - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

My experience with Aptivias.... not good. Id estimate you having a difficult time getting the sound (mwave) or modem to work w/o the aptivas software. Once I tried to eliminate the aptiva installion and just install w95 ...on a friends machine, it was ok untill the modem was called up or sound. Do you have the Mwave? I cant say for sure but Id guess the SuSE cdrom isnt bootable ;-)

Actually, even though it is IBM and IBM is very proprietary, for some reason this box does not contain too much proprietary hardware. For example. The modem is a LUCENT based winmodem so there is very little hope of getting it working in LINUX. SVGA is a TRIDENT 3DImage 975 so it should work without any probs in LINUX. Sound is from a CRYSTAL 4232 CHIPSET, so once again there should be no probs there. CDROM is SONY EIDE ATAPI interface, so no probs there.
I cant say for sure but Id guess the SuSE cdrom isnt bootable ;-)
Then how come "LI" came?! I personally think that the boot sector of the CDROM is buggered up.

Did you set up fetchmail to run everything from the commandline, or did you set up a .fetchmailrc in your home directory? I've got fetchmail set up here to pick up the mail for 5 users, so fetchmail is run as root (root never gets any mail tho:-). Also, even though you may be using only one account, if you are using the fetchmailrc (btw, the permissions does have to be set correctly or the file will be rejected). There is another file in /etc/ppp that fetchmail does look at to match your user name and password with the isp you are trying to connect with (When I first set up fetchmail, I was accessing 2 isp's with 5 email accounts, boy that was fun to set up:-)
When I send the user, it accepts, and requests the password, but the password is rejected. But it works fine with Netscape.
What may be happening is "Character translation?", sometimes, a character gets translated into another character during transmission if entered from the keyboard (that has happened to me, it went away when I set up the fetchmailrc file setup:-) -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
